Either that or he had the misfortune of getting an unhinged guard who decided to get medieval on his ass. People in that line of work rough up the prisoners all the time since its a miserable job and even at posh richy richy jails there's still the potential for guards to abuse their power. Add in the fact that this guy is infamous and his crimes were particularly vile and exploitative and I don't find it that unlikely that some rando snapped and clubbed him to death.
