Oh joy.

Ok so I’ve watched the Drag Kids documentary.

apologies in advance for typing, I am on mobile

Stephan is basically a Lady Gaga impersonator, he seems to really love singing and performing and his parents seem reasonable about it. His performances at home are all family environments.

Jason is the poor brown one, he seems like he’s being pushed by his parents a bit, but he’s also shy and weird so that might account for some of it, he does come alive on stage. One of his performances at home was traditionally tipped by the crowd handing him dollar bills but it was a non-sexual performance/outfit and the crowd seemed to be like PFLAG family types

in Vancouver, a girl named Bracken wants to be a drag queen, it’s more of a dress-up/dance/fandom thing for her, like drag is her kpop. She’s genuinely interested in the culture and takes a vogue dance class, but can’t attend the recital because it’s at a bar. She and her mom aw shucks out of there with what seems like a well-adjusted amount of disappointment.

and then we get to Lactatia / Nemis who is positioned as the bitch of this documentary

he and his mom definitely have that more of a friend than a parent thing, it’s clear that Nemis doesn’t respect her at all

“I do not want children, to have to set myself aside and deal with them before I have to deal with myself. I want to stay a child forever”

Nemis’ first performance is a decidedly conservative one, but then they go to a store opening with a STRAIGHT UP bunch of puppy men in fetish gear, the store is selling a Lactatia shirt. Meanwhile, in interview, mom insists that this is not sexual. Then they go to an actual bar where lactatia runs drinks to adult fans’ tables.

So all the kids go to Montreal at the behest of Lactatia. The first three have some very normal kid times and go nuts trying on each other’s fun clothes, meanwhile is made clear that Nemis doesn’t quite know how to just play dress up with other kids.

They have a dance rehearsal while the parents talk. Mom mentions the hate they get and being called a “child abuser,” it seems like the other parents redirect the conversation to a less extreme place. The kids get ice cream and Nemis wants to call their group Lactatia and the Drag Kids. “it’s not all about you” says Stefan. The kids all have some more stresses and moments in the lead up to the show, which are a little emotional but pretty normal.

For the dance performance to Lady Gaga’s Born This Way, Nemis wears what I guess is supposed to be a Jo Calderone look cause he’s in a suit except there’s a full face of makeup, whatever, still another weirdly conservative choice for Lactatia. Stephan almost has an autism attack onstage, I was preparing for the cringe nd exploitation Of it all but then he powered through it and he seemed really happy and like it was a genuine breakthrough moment for him. Stephan, Jason and Bracken all get congratulations from the dance teacher and their parents.

Then Nemis shows off his trophies from drag balls. All the kids are going to an “all-ages vogue ball“ (a drag/dance competition/pageant, see: Paris Is Burning for an intro, but this a disneyfied version for the kids) Nemis may have to teach the kids how to walk in the competition, and he may have to compete against some of them in the “face” category (basically doing a supermodel
walk on the runway.) Cut to Bracken, who is teaching Jason to model walk and helping Stephan with his makeup.

Nemis and Stephan have a walk-off, Nemis wins and Stephan has an autism attack and runs off stage like straight up Maury style, but quickly recovers a minute later while hugging his dad saying “I had a hissy fit but I’m okay now.”

Nemis is unaffected by Stefan’s episode and walks the runway as a winner, and then leaves the event saying “I looked so good.” He misses Bracken winning a trophy for a fashion look, and when she sees him outside his mom has to remind him to congratulate her. He then grabs her trophy and loudly admires it (sarcastically.)

Everyone but Nemis shares a tearful goodbye in front of the hotel. Nemis slept in, and mom describes herself as “a ghoster, I just kinda like sneak off into the back and be gone so this is perfect.”

tl;dr

it’s no hard hitting expose, but Jessica comes off terribly and so does Nemis, and In the doc they are the bad drag kid example juxtaposed with the three
