Slightly fftopic: but this was kind of the one thing I thought was weird to jump down Rowling's throat on. People seem to forget that the series started in the 90s and ended in the early 2000s, when the atmosphere regarding homosexuality - especially in things that are labeled as children's media - was still somewhat of a touchy subject, and even when JK proclaimed Dumbledore was gay it was met with push-back from "think of the children" types despite it not really being present in the books. If there was a point that JK included explicit references to it in the books, she likely would've been told by her publishers to remove them, so it seems like unfair to dump all the blame at JK's feet. Even then it's hard to think of many organic instances it would've come up considering the main character is a student/teenager. I mean, how many middle schoolers and high schoolers know anything about the love lives of their guidance counselors/principals?

But I digress, everything else regarding JK's virtue signalling is spot on.

Fan communities have had a very long history of wanting to see their favorite (usually male) characters fuck, all the way back to the 70s Star Trek fanzines, and with the invention of social media fans were able to connect both to their peers and their favorite creators faster than ever. But with that came a sort of entitlement where fans were able to readily make demands of said creators, especially in the "makes these characters fuck" department, and with a lot of academic concepts being more accessible what with college students with Social Science degrees being able to touch base with young audiences - including fan communities - it ended up birthing both the social justice rhetoric you now see on Tumblr, as well as introducing the concept of "Death of the Author" to teens/tweens who didn't actually understand it and took it to mean "I don't actually have to listen to what the author said about their own work" rather than it simply being one tool of many in literary analysis.

The end result was a bunch of cringey fucks who declare "X is [insert trendy minority status of the month here] now, sorry I don't make the rules" about just about everything out of either narcissism or a fetish, but then hand-wave skepticism with a buzzwords about representation.

So... Tumblr.

Having Dumbledore come out as gay at any point in the book would have been caused trouble. And It would have been odd for him to mention it as well as having hints about it.

I guess it just felt a bit out of the blue. Plus she didnt seem eager to make any other character gay. I think some people thought Sirus and Lupin were together but she squash that theory.

I just felt like she was willing to say what ever she can about her characters only to later retract them or recon them. Imagine if she decided now that Dumbldore wasn't gay. Imagine how much fans would riot.

It's really easy to look at Rowling's Dumbledore reveal in a cynical way. She brings it on herself with her very transparent virtue signalling. It would've been controversial to have slobbing knobs in a children's book. It wouldn't have been controversial to have Hermoine be black from the beginning. Since it was pre-sped internet, it wouldn't have been very controversial to cast a little black girl for the movies. Instead, she waits nearly 20 years and demands audiences accept Hermoine was a true and honest black woman this entire time and calls you racist for having felt like you've been lied to.

I've said it before but Rowling coming out by saying Dumbledore was gay after the fact is passable cause one, his sexuality had no pull on the plot and two, back in the early 2000s we didn't have the rampant virtue signaling like we do today. Now in this day in and age black Hermione is blatant pandering.

Fun fact: back in the early 2000's Rowling's website was littered with interactive Easter eggs, one of them including a sketch of scrapped version of sorcerer's stone where Dean Thomas and Neville were included in the scene where the kids find Fluffy. Dean is explicitly drawn as black and Hermione white. The site has since been renovated into a more traditional Easter egg-less site.

JK Rowling’s reps have claimed she had a “clumsy and middle-aged moment” – after she liked a tweet that referred to trans women as ‘men in dresses’.

The beloved Harry Potter author shocked fans yesterday when she liked a controversial tweet amid a row about the status of transgender women in the left-wing Labour Party.

After a surge in anti-trans rhetoric, a fringe group of campaigners have led calls for transgender women to be banned from standing on Labour’s women-only shortlists for Parliament, and have threatened to resign from the party if it does not agree to their demands.

Rowling, a prominent Labour supporter who frequently engages in issues around the party, ‘liked’ a message about the campaign from a prominent anti-transgender campaigner.

Approached for comment, a spokesperson for the author told PinkNews that she had not intentionally liked the message.

The spokesperson told PinkNews: “I’m afraid J.K. Rowling had a clumsy and middle-aged moment and this is not the first time she has favourited by holding her phone incorrectly.”
