I remember when that story broke out, and the outrage over his accepted insanity plea. Nobody was buying it. Making it scarier was that that was the bus my cousin could have been on, going back home after a visit with us.
They seem to deal with sex pests more harshly than murderers, and while that's not totally a bad thing, it should paint just how inconsistent our country's law enforcement is. So it wouldn't surprise me if Jon got off because he's trans.

I am participating in a thread that is debating why sexual assault is socially treated as worse than murder, despite logically being the lesser of the two. There are valid points, however I am still glad that my rapist didn't kill me. In the US, there are many cases where the penalties for drug crimes are worse than or similar to cases of brutal murder. Even accidental homicide and "crime of passion" offences get similar sentences. In some states, murder can get less time than drugs or sexual assault. Yet in other states, they use life without parole for one-off killers who are unlikely to re-offend and who likely wouldn't have committed the crime at all, but for extenuating circumstance, as if they are no different than cold-blooded serial killers. Punishments are extremely inconsistent and worse, it's been proven that tougher sentences do nothing to prevent crime.
If we, as a society by way of our penal system, start letting criminals get away with such socially harmful crimes as Jonathan has been committing for years now (and seems to be confidently continuing to commit, likely because he feels untouchable), then these self-ID laws won't be misused by a few rotten apples, they will be used by the worst among us and for far worse crimes (not to make light of JY).
It's already painfully clear that JY spends time strategizing his moves to exploit loopholes and games the system and resources in the same way he spends hours coming up with ways to socially "hack" little girls to come up with plausible reasons to talk about certain things or get certain information so they won't notice how creepy he is being until it's too late. Even and clumsy as he is, it worked a number of times and so far he's proven to be untouchable. If any pedos are watching this saga unfold, I am sure they are taking notes. He's a good example of a person whose sociopathy is clear and in the future we will wonder why no one stopped him before it got to whatever horrifying degree.
