I don't really like Gervais or Baddiel but I suspect they think criminalising mean tweets is stupid and dangerous. The shits who run the UK may be awful, but that doesn't mean everyone agrees with them.
Most people probably hate their guts. Hence all the censorship, propaganda and repression.
A large section of UK comedians exist in a kind of Hugbox. They make money appearing on various BBC panel shows like 'Have I got news for you', they act edgy but in reality they're pretty careful about who they target.
David Baddiel is a little bit different, largely because I think he sees himself more as a serious writer than a comedian. He's also quite careful in the public causes he engages with. Ricky Gervais has an international audience and I think he just doesn't give a shit.
To give an example of how they've acted in the past, they were the only big name British Comedias to defend Count Dankula. Not only did they defend him but they explicitly said the Pug video was funny, no bullshit caveats about them only defending dankula on principle.

In contrast when Sargon was sperging out.

The point I'm trying to make is that Baddiel and Gervais, know how to pick their fights. They're also aware of their huge following and are adept at engaging with them to make their point.
Before people could defend the Mainstream Media by saying they just weren't aware of Yaniv. Now it's getting to the point where people can point blank accuse them of being too scared to cover Yaniv.
