JRPG General - Video games were never meant to be shorter than 50 hours.

Anyone played Rouge Galexy? that game has been on my to play list for awhile but i still have not gotten around it.

One game you dont hear much about anymore is The Last Story on the wii made by the original Final Fantasy devs.

I remember liking it but im pretty sure it boomed since i have not heard of it since.

There is another game on my list to play called Jeanne Darc, that's about Joan of Arc.

Its an SPRG but i keep hearing good things about it. Maybe some of you have played it.

I posted about it in the Retro Games thread, but I think Koudelka kind of sucks as a game. Everything else about it (story, atmosphere, cast, and ESPECIALLY the cutscenes) are great, but the gameplay is complete horse ass and made me drop it by Disc 2.

It's a slow grid-like combat system where all of the items have durability and enemies have absorb resistances that couldn't possibly be known of beforehand, causing you to full heal them entirely by accident. The mechanic where leveling up stats too much causes negative effects (iirc there's a piety stat for healing and if you level it up too much healing effects on you will be worse), is extremely cool. I just wish they made this game an RE styled survival horror because the gameplay takes me out of the game immensely.
The creative lead on Koudelka, Hiroki Kikuta (composer famous for Secret of Mana) wanted to implement a real-time combat system, but the rest of the team insisted on keeping it more traditional. And what do you know, the combat was and still is the biggest complaint about the game.
Kikuta hasn't designed a game since and his ideas for sequels never came to fruition, but the team he assembled went on to make Shadow Hearts so I guess there's that.

I don't like the new JRPG's with the weird shit like the femme boys and the cat ears. I like older JRPG's. I also like the new ones made in the old 16 bit retro style like Octopath traveler. If it has a retro style/look I will buy it.

I was playing Wild Arms on my Miyoo Mini Plus the other day. It's really great having that game on a portable. Though I have played it using Duckstation and it's pretty good and nice looking on that.

It's good but not as good as Dark Chronicle. I remember being too much of a Star Wars ripoff where you wonder around 90% of the game and the plot only appears the last tenth.

It's competent but doesn't really have anything memorable. Especially when the other two games it came out with (Xenoblade and Pandora's Tower) are way more unique.

It's fantastic. Fun battle system and use of the historic backdrop.

I did play Dark Chronicle for a bit once. After a few hours i gave up on it. Just wasn't for me. A YouTuber i watched made a long video about it and the second game.

You guys should play Baten Kaitos. Both the first and second game (origin) is good.

That Factory subquest

was infected by Persona and Bravely Default
I get being upset that 50% of JRPGs have high schoolers doing social links now, but what did Bravely Default do wrong?

Someone other than Atlus / Nintendo trying to make turn based combat fun was nice.

I'm glad somebody mentioned Majuular. Probably the best YTber talking about JRPGs at the current moment even though he barely does anymore.

Bravely Default had AAA devs realize they can also do the indie shtick of having SNES style graphic and people will eat that slop. It doesn't help that even the good looking games have those graphics because it makes retards clap.

In general having that level of graphics is inexcusable nowadays, and while zoomers will be mistaken for thinking it's retro, those games are missing the jank and inconvenience of actual RPGs. Everything is too slick and railroaded.

He hits the nail on the head that the game is way more suited for children with loads of spare time than adults. Also I should play Baten Kaitos eventually.
I don't remember if it was good or bad. I think it was like a slightly less autistic factorio.

Yeah I meant Octopath. Bravely Default at least had models.
Sprites are not inherently outdated and inexcusable. Pixel art as a whole is overused nowadays, that I can agree with, but Octopath's art style is easily better than 99% of pixel indieslop. It's not like there's much variety in art styles among modern JRPGs anyway, aside from pixel art you only have cel-shaded animu styles or Unreal Engine realism.

Anyway thread tax. I'm not a Monster Hunter fan, but I enjoyed Monster Hunter Stories 2 and I'm thinking of getting the first one. It's kinda like Pokemon, you raise your own monsters and pit them against other monsters, but you get to fight alongside them and ride them outside of battle as well.

Are the MH stories games similar to Monster Hunter gameplay whatsoever or are they just turn based JRPGs? I want something Monster Hunter to play while I wait for Wilds to get more content/run better.

Stories has turn-based combat, you can control your character and issue orders to your monster or let it choose its attack, and you also usually have 1 or 2 companions who you can't control (ETA: but you can see what they're planning to do in the upcoming turn and plan around that). It's got some aspects of the main series, like breaking monster parts with the correct type of weapon and looting them to craft armor, but I'm not familiar enough with the main games to compare.

Nah it's good, looking at Steam the bad reviews are mainly people who don't realize that this is how JRPGs supposed to play and look. They think it needs to be Persona in graphics and everything needs to be entirely based on QoL.
It was a YouTube review from a channel that focuses on JRPGs that I heard it from, forgot which one. Good to hear though.

90s was the golden age of gaming and RPGs.
It really was, but it extended into the early 00's too. Wasn't till the PS3 era that gaming took a step down in quality after generation upon generation of vast improvements, and it was a steep downfall after that.

The series is getting an "update" for a more "mature" style and also a new battle system. (being SE and all.. some sort of AA/H&S slop mos likely) Things not looking good.
Especially since it probably entered planning/pre-production at the height of Wokeism, then depending on how much work Sugiyama and Toriyama were able to contribute before their deaths... Yeah, it's not looking good.

At best it's a slightly darker DQ with an ATB battle system but still otherwise faithful to the series, which would be fine.

It's retardedly difficult, if that doesn't bother you it's pretty good but I dropped it.

Doesn't Vanillaware technically use sprites? They're definitely not outdated or anything. Even pixelated sprites look great if done correctly (so, basically, rarely ever).

Here's proof Square could still do it well if they wanted to, instead of shitting out bad looking 3D chibi models or just plain wrong looking "HD2D" crap:

I like JRPGs but dislike Anime and Japanese bullshit.
What are some good JRPGs that aren’t that J?
To answer this question, I would have to know what you mean.

If you mean no overused Japanese tropes, you're kinda sorta screwed the more modern you get. Even the ones designed by Westerners tend to just ape the common tropes they grew up with.

My first thought was "Parasite Eve."
