JRPG General - Video games were never meant to be shorter than 50 hours.

To answer this question, I would have to know what you mean.

If you mean no overused Japanese tropes, you're kinda sorta screwed the more modern you get. Even the ones designed by Westerners tend to just ape the common tropes they grew up with.

My first thought was "Parasite Eve."
That's a great choice too actually. Not sure if Mario RPG would count as Japanese or not, but it's worth a mention.

It was supposed to release this month but they reveal there was very little progress in the time and the publisher apparently ran away with the money so they're fucked. The games are "delayed indefinitely" since they never found another publisher. (Why is it so hard to find one? Do they all really think turn based jrpg doesn't sell?)
Well think about it from a corporate standpoint.

They sell, sure. They just don't bring in as much money as parceling out waifu costumes and powercreep in a gacha. I was thinking of things like Tribe Nine myself. It makes complete sense.

These things don't sell a million copies unless they manage to attract coomers and more serious gamers simultaneously, which is a lot like finding a needle in a haystack. Being competent is not enough nowadays.

I like JRPGs but dislike Anime and Japanese bullshit.
What are some good JRPGs that aren’t that J?

The last JRPG I played was Fantasian: Neo Dimension.
I turned off the voices to make it more bearable, but it was still too much for my tastes. The environments, music and systems were great, just hated the dialog and anime shit.
You could probably get away with playing the first 6 Final Fantasy games and 9 Anime BS free. They lean a whole lot more into fantasy than the modern direction that the series is going in now. I'd argue the Mother series (The one with Earthbound in it) is also anime BS free, though it's weird enough that it might turn you off eitherway.

New Nintendo Direct came around, which means more new JRPGs. Unfortunately it's nothing new and just remasters and remakes:

EXCEPT FOR A NEW SUPER ROBOT WARS THAT GOT ANNOUNCED ON THE JAPANESE DIRECT:

Oh shit, remake of Raidou. Game was classic jank. Hopefully they don't change anything for those who haven't played it.

I'm just wondering where Dragon Quest XII is? Did they scrap it after Sugiyama died or after Toriyama died?
They're trying to reinvent Dragon Quest's vibe for a new generation and considering that DQ is all about vibes I imagine they might have 2 or 3 scrapped prototypes already. They have to be careful with this franchise.

Visual Novels though never really stopped going out for the PC due to the low cost of creation.
That and most VNs are passion projects and the PC is the one platform in Japan that's not governed by the increasingly-anal CERO. The PS3 generation was also when CERO swung into gear and started clamping down heavily on content.

I'm glad somebody mentioned Majuular. Probably the best YTber talking about JRPGs at the current moment even though he barely does anymore.
Eh he's working on Ultima right now and his videos are usually more than an hour long so I can forgive the wait

KBash is also pretty good at covering jarpigs and is one of the few explicitly lefty youtubers who doesn't try to put everything into the faggy North American prog blender. His video about Vanillaware is really good and I was pretty glad he took the time to call out Jason Schreier's dogpiling on Dragon Crown as punching down on a small developer making a labor of love.

Raidou looks cool. I might pick it up since I kinda love Taishou-era shit.

Dragon Quest I and II are boring games and I don't know why anyone not Japanese would want an HD remaster of them. Rate me dumb but I don't think the series got good until III.

I've never been able to get into SaGa. I got Scarlet Grace and the HD port of RS3 a few years back and fell off in the first hour. Am I missing something?

I don't know man I just can't stand watching his videos anymore. Every once and a while he says something about how "MAN HAVING A FEMALE PROTAGONIST WOULD TOTALLY OWN THE CHUD GAMERS". It's not even that I agree or disagree or whatever, it just comes off as the guy punching ghosts to own some imaginary group of people who probably don't play JRPGs in the first place, just review the damn game.

Dragon Quest I is a very fun game that feels more like a puzzle game than a modern JRPG. Some parts of me wish that more JRPGs took chances with letting people explore and talk to NPCs in order to progress instead of just putting a big marker but that'd never happen nowadays for a myriad of reasons. Dragon Quest III felt like a full evolution of those ideas on a far larger scale with more than just (You) there to fight. Dragon Quest II I'll agree with you though, it's not very fun and it's a slog to get through.

From looking at the trailer and a longplay of the PS2 original, they changed some aspects of the combat system along with adding the new Doi demons from SMTIV onwards. I'll probably play the original on PS2 first before the remastermake drops.

Yeah the digressions can get a little tiring but he's one of the few youtubers covering JRPGs that isn't a manchild soypogging exclusively over new releases and chasing FOTM. Davidinc and Kiseki Nut come to mind there.

Gaming Broductions is also good at covering non-FOTM jarpigs but he's a little too much style over substance for me.

Oh hey, a thread for what once was my favorite genre.

Picked up the new Mana game on the heels of the Seiken Densetsu 3 remake (which was pretty fucking good.) jaysus how the fuck can you fuck up a new game like that. Cut out the fucking cutscenes, lemme smack some rabites, fuck. Guess I'll go finish up my playthroughs of the last two Star Oceans instead.

The 90s classics of Septerra Core and Anachronox got you, fam.

It was outsourced to NetEase who then spun up a studio in Japan to make it. So we have Japanese publisher -> Chinese developer -> outsourced Japanese studio. And the studio was shut down like 12 hours after it came out. Basically it was an elaborate rent-seeking operation by NetEase (kinda like what they did with Marvel Rivals).

We don't hate China enough.

I played it, got 100% with raiho and all
they obviously reworked the gameplay, got rid of the pre-rendered graphics a la resident evil and now you can summon 2 demons at the same time just like in king abaddon, and you can JUMP now
Can't blame them, the original gameplay was fine but very simple at times, and probably made it from scratch to release the sequel too shortly after
It's really more of a remake than a remaster, I'll probably buy it but I'll be too lazy to advance in the game since I've already completed the original :smug:
I kinda hope they make another raidou kuzunoha game, they've clearly done a lot of effort just to re-release the games

First time it's being released on PC and consoles AND in the west with an english translation too. X and V are still region locked and 30 was kinda boring. Looking forward to this.

I wonder if they'll add the new Persona like shit to increase sales. They would have probably mentioned them in the trailer though.

don't expect any social links with rasputin or gotou, or raido anytime soon. They could probably add the mini-cases a.k.a. secondary missions from the second game at most
Maybe this time they'll add the mahjong minigame cut from the gaijin releases, or do something about the kyouji model and the animations it had in the og game's files

Finally got to the Ice Cave dungeon and I'm baffled that this song seemingly only plays during this small stretch at the start. It's the best song in the OST by a country mile.
