  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
He's a weirdo bisexual sex pest who got into the industry via nepotism and his performances are all kinda meh. The bigger question is what didn't he do wrong?
Wait bisexual and nepotism? I thought it was cause he won some anime voice competition in Michigan?

This is my favorite game genre and have multiple things on my lap right now.

Lost Odyssey, I'm close to finishing Disc 2. Loving the story, vibes and music, but the gameplay itself is feeling like a slog to a degree. I have to "motivate" myself to tackle a dungeon for example. The random encounter rate is definitely a bit too high for my liking. the combat system is interesting between the immortals and mortals and how abilities are learnt. That a good chunk of the party is basically Kaim, his wife, and his niece and nephew is honestly wholesome. The "dreams" have also been great for the most part. I also understand why people call it the true FFXIII. I haven't played 13 mind you, but just the aesthetics and music from Lost Odyssey screams FF to me in a way that XIII never even came close to.

Breath of Fire IV. Earlyish game. Got back to the sand speeder and crossed the dam that got taken down by a dragon. I'm enjoying the gameplay loop in this one more, it feels faster and snappier, though Ryu is taking way more damage than I would expect. I am sad to see that the dragon system is a huge step down from BoF3, but I have heard that this one's story is the real deal. BoF3 I stopped playing just before the timeskip ages ago, decided to try 4 instead of trying to replay 3.

Terranigma. I tried it ages ago and didn't even do all 5 towers. Turns out that on a bit more than an hour all 5 were done with in this playthrough and I have to wonder what the hell I was even doing the last time I played. Really liking this one. The music is fantastic, gameplay is quick and snappy and I'm intrigued by what "resurrecting the world" will entail. Finished reviving the plants and going into the area that I guess will revive the birds.

As for somebody's question about Xenogears being worth it... I love that game to pieces, but I can see it being a bit of a slog with it's jack platforming and encounter rate. I consider it a flawed masterpiece and definitely worth having a go at it. But I could see why one would bounce off.

Also, while I'm here, Xenoblade Chronicles X, anybody tried it on Riujinx/Yuzu and does it run well or is it ass?

Do you guys liek Chrono Cross? : )
I love it, but it's not really a worthy follow-up to Trigger, which is the consensus opinion. The art and music alone makes me glad it exists, and exploration is fun. I respect them trying to be unique with the combat system but it could've been better, though it's still serviceable.

seven pirates h is amazing thats the post
Is it actually a fun game or are you just hornyposting? Most of that company's games are slop but Monster Monpiece is genuinely great, a true hidden gem everybody will unfortunately pass up because it's a fan service game.

I still can't believe Idea Factory and Compile Heart are still in business. I also can't believe they're still making Neptunia games.
The first Neptunia is decent, approaching good, but I didn't like the rest of the ones I tried very much.

Terranigma.
I didn't give that a fair shot, nor any in the Quintet trilogy really. Something about them just turns me off, idk. I'll actually play them for real eventually.

Breath of Fire IV's PC release got rereleased on GOG with a ton of changes to make it playable! There are still a ton of issues and differences between this version and the PSX version but it's still great to have a version that's widely accessible for everyone. Some guy on the GOG forums posted all of the issues/differences present with the port at the current time here:
1. Bilinear Filtering

The PC CD-ROM version of Breath of Fire IV employs a forced bilinear filter on the game’s 2D sprites and 3D environments that is not present in the PlayStation version. This results in blurred, smoothed-out 2D sprites and smoothed-out 3D textures.

Solution: The bilinear filter in the PC version can be overridden by using an external program such as dgVoodoo2 to enforce point-filtering, achieving a more pixel art-look akin to the PlayStation version.

Request: GOG should update the DirectX wrapper to allow you to force point sampling for a pixel look.

2. 3D Environments and Models

3D environments and 3D models are rendered at a higher resolution in the PC version of Breath of Fire IV, resulting in a smoother look with less jagged edges. Nevertheless, clipping issues occur between the models and the geometry. i.e. Aura Dragon's right claw clips through the crater in an early cutscene, and Khafu's wing clips through the cliffside during the boss fight as Fou-Lu.

Also, seams in the subdivided 3D polygonal terrain are much more visible in the PC version.

Request: Update collision of 3D models to avoid clipping and be closer to the PS1 version. Mask the seams in the 3D blocked terrain.

3. Text/Font

The PS1 version's pixel font was replaced with a chunkier font reminiscent of Denver Serial.

Request: It'd be great to be able to switch between the classic font and the 2003 PC font.

4. Music Comparison

The PlayStation version of the BGM (background music) employs a reverb effect to make it sound fuller. The PC version of the music has the reverb effect removed, resulting in a flatter sound, especially with brass instruments.

Request: Update the BGM with the PS1 version's.

5. Incorrect Looping of BGM

In the PlayStation version of the game, BGM loops properly. In the PC version, when a track reaches its end, the music abruptly restarts from the beginning without a proper, seamless loop.

Request: Fix the music looping bug so that music seamlessly loops.

6. Missing Boss Victory Themes

Breath of Fire IV has two victory theme melodies that play depending on which continent you’re battling in:

Eastern Continent Victory Theme: “To the Victor Go the Spoils (2000 Edition)”

Western Continent Victory Theme: “Take The Money & Run”

In the PlayStation version, upon defeating a boss, alternative, more triumphant-sounding versions of these two victory themes play. These versions are absent in the PC release, with the normal victory themes playing instead.

Request: Bring back the PS1 version's unique boss victory theme variations.

7. Removed & Edited Cutscenes

The deleted scenes in Checkpoint, Shikk, Saldine, and the Castle from the North American and European PlayStation version remain removed in the English PC release.

Request: Restore these cutscenes in the English release since they still exist in the Japanese version.

8. Dengeki Shop

The Dengeki Shop south of Mt. Glom was removed from the Japanese PC release of Breath of Fire IV: Utsurowazaru Mono and is not present in any other PC version.

Request: Restore the Dengeki Shop in all versions.

9. Remapping Camera Turn Left and Right to L1/R1 aka LB/RB results in the camera turning not working.

In the PS1 version, camera turning was bound to the shoulder buttons, not the triggers. Meanwhile Change Rank was L2/R2 (triggers). Ideally, you should be able to reverse these and bind them like they were in the PS1 version.

Request: Allow Camera Left and Camera Right to work with L1/R1 and Change Rank to work with both L2/R2.

10. On-screen command prompts show keyboard keys even when using a controller.

Request: Replace on-screen keyboard key prompts with appropriate buttons depending on the controller connected (PS/Xbox/NSW).

11. Windowed Mode doesn't work and displays like Fullscreen.

For some people who wish to change the game to get rid of the ugly bilinear filter applied to sprites as well as general recommended settings check this guide here!

EDIT: In other JRPG Related news, Sakura Wars 2 finally got an English translation!

I love Xenogears but disc 2 does suck. I'm a storyfag, so I probably would've been fine with it becoming largely a visual novel. The problem is the presentation -- a lot of disc 2 is a character sitting in a rocking chair in a black void with a screenshot behind them telling you about an event, and even then they still yadda yadda yadda over a bunch of shit. It fucking sucks.

I'm surprised it's taken this long for a fan retranslation. XG has always had a very autisticly dedicated fanbase, so for years I kept expecting one to happen but never did (until now, that is). Hopefully this spurs someone to pick back up the fan translation of Xenosaga Ep1&2 DS remake that looked like it was going good for a while but then was just suddenly abandoned.

Decided I'd might as well cross reference my thoughts for Expedition 33. It's very much a JRPG and it's very kino. Probably one of the best JRPGs to come out in the last 2-3 years and it's not even Japanese. The devs have such a blatant love for the genre with constant references to Shadow Hearts and Lost Odyssey and much much more. If you like JRPGs, you absolutely should at least pirate this game. It's quality.

I started playing this rpg maker survival horror game for a bit over one hour, it has very good monster designs and an ambitious premise of having only 15 ingame days to find away solve the problem that looking outside turns you into a monster. It's fun but stressful so i dont play much at once. Sounds like a good game for LISA fans.

On normal mode saving requires exploring new rooms which can be annoying. Some small first impression tips

1-Get used to dying and running. You don't really know how big a threat is until it's too late.
2-Healing and money is very scarce and weapons can break. Only fight if it's mandatory, profitable or you really want exp.
3-You can attack any npc if you want (very tabletop) but some are clearly friendly and give you sidequests, or are even recruitable. Some will wipe you easily anyway.
4-This game likes to troll you so get used to reloading often, if not outright savescumming. One time i picked a cowboy hat and put it on and OOPS it was a brain parasite fucked me over so i had to reload. You can hard fail sidequests and be locked out of rewards.
5-throwables, guns and explosives do fixed high damage but should be used on emergencies. You can craft molotovs and acid bombs.
6-Day 1 is really hard cause you're alone, especially floor 1. More doors open as day passes so if you're low hp at day 1 go play games and rest. Beating the racing game gives you a spell that raises dodge rate and is good.
7-There are random encounters when spend time in your apartment. Some of these encounters can be potential party members. In fact, a guide i saw straight up recommends you to play games until hopefuly you get someone.
8-Day 2 has a potential party member in the room next to yours but you have to do his sidequest perfectly aka say you're his neighbor, dont mention his father, give him the teddy bear on the fight, meet his mom (no need to kill her, you can run) and ask him to stay with you.
9-Enemies have weakness that matter. From what i gather. Enemies with eyes are weak to stabbing. Small animals to crush. Fleshy stuff to slash. Fire and acid are elements too. If your weapon is bad you can throw something.
10-There are hidden stats for the mc like hygiene, stress, hunger, etc. If you look at the mirror he'll mention if something is wrong but so far i didnt have issues.
11-Day 2 opens a shopkepper who sells duct tape. It's expensive but it you can repair 4 weapon.
12-Save and experiment your cooking recipes to see what is better for you. Mixing 2 foods seems to scale better and saves time than eating 1 food twice. If you mix something with bread it becomes a consumable sandwich.

It's made by a French Canadian Something Awful goon and isn't full of LGBTQ+ shit or anything like that.

Yeah, I know, it sounds impossible but it is nonetheless true.

Final Fantasy Tactics is finally clicking with me after that first chapter being kind of rough and god the AI is very very stupid, almost to the point where it's hampering my enjoyment of the game because missions where I have to protect the AI are nigh on impossible because they'd actively kill themselves on missions. The game is a lot of fun though and I love the spin on the job system they use here.

This second option is literal torture though the AI keeps getting itself killed despite my best efforts. One run got ruined because the AI had the brilliant idea of aiming at an enemy with a 0% chance of hitting as opposed to running.

You know what's even crazier when you think about Xenogears? It pretty much barely had any side content, something you always expect from a JRPG never mind one made by Square Soft at the time. As you said, by disc 2 the game pretty much is on rails and the only "dungeon" I remember being able to explore is the final one which is was a bitch and a half to get through.

I still have a bit of a soft spot for Xenogears, but disc 2 did the game no favors.

Without spoiling things too much be sure to have at least 2 separate save files. You'll probably find out the hard way why.

I've already been using multiple save files and saving after every mission after I nearly softlocked myself after mission 4 because too many of my units died (I suck shit at tactics games). I haven't looked into why I have to save often and save in multiple slots but for tactics games I get hyper autistic about saving. At this point I'm using every save slot and replacing the oldest one as I go along. I was really surprised at how little units you can bring into battle, maybe my experience with Disgaea is really throwing me off here, but a party of 4 on story missions and 5 on random encounters seems extremely small. Also not being able to see the map terrain before you place units kind of sucks but it's not the end of the world.

That's good. You'll probably get clapped in a few future fights, but at least you won't lose much progress if you do.

I almost got soft-locked on the stage with that one girl on the roof you're supposed to protect, it's an awesome game anyway.

I hope the supposedly in-development remake fixes this stuff, and balances the game more, the special characters are overpowered as hell.

Bought the Lunar Remaster on PlayAsia. Apparently, there was such a demand for it they sold out. I am still waiting for them to ship my game and so far they keep pushing back the shipment date. I read somewhere in a Reddit post that there was going to be pre-orders in June so I guess that's when I might get mine. Making it exclusive to Amazon over here in the US is fucking stupid. They should have also provided more physical copies for sale.

Also, on PlayAsia I saw that there is a remaster/remake of Saga Frontier II that's supposed to release in June. Hopefully I can just get that from Best Buy or GameStop. Having to ship shit from halfway around the world is a bit much.

I also find it funny that PlayAsia offers discrete packaging for 50 cents extra. All they sell is video games and weeb shit. It's not like its dildos. lol

There was this really amazing Jrpg recommended to me by a Turkish gas pump jockey of all people, It’s called Massacre Princess Catholicon.

He ranted about it for like 15 minutes straight on how great it is!

The Saga Frontier remaster released about 2 months ago. I guess they're having issues rolling out the physical release. I know the Lunar physical collection situation is a nightmare, I'm really surprised that it's seemingly sold out everywhere because I barely hear about it anywhere online.

I finished the Lunar 1 Remaster a bit ago and I have to say that the WD translation really grew on me. Would I have preferred a more accurate translation? Yeah sure, but what people in the 90s got wasn't bad whatsoever. I could even tell that the original translation had a sense of humor as well so it's not like a Ghost Stories situation where a relatively serious story got turned into an actual joke.

The gameplay was alright. The game wasn't extremely difficult and If I'm being honest I never used any of Alex's Dragonmaster skills, they all just seemed worse than just spamming Sword Dance ad nauseam until the fucker died. The bosses weren't that hard and as long as you had somebody as the dedicated item bitch for when the actual damage dealers run out of MP, there was never any problem whatsoever.

Also To The Horizon has been stuck in my head since I originally heard it. It's such a great overworld theme.

I'll probably wait until I finish a couple of other JRPGs before I get around to Lunar 2 but from what I've heard people seem to like it more than Lunar 1 as a whole. It's still a 7/10 game and I can see how GameArts eventually took the ideas brought from this first game and went on to make Grandia.

Apparently it's a small part of a game called Look Outside that was mentioned in an earlier post this page. Both games look interesting though horror isn't really my thing.
