Five environmental activists who organised protests that brought part of the M25 to a standstill over four days have been jailed.
Forty-five Just Stop Oil protesters climbed gantries on the motorway in November 2022, forcing police to stop the traffic, in an attempt to cause gridlock across southern England.
Judge Christopher Hehir said Roger Hallam, 58, Daniel Shaw, 38, Louise Lancaster, 58, Lucia Whittaker De Abreu, 35, and Cressida Gethin, 22, had "crossed the line from concerned campaigner to fanatic".
At Southwark Crown Court, Hallam was sentenced to five years' imprisonment while the other defendants each received four-year jail terms.

'Intricate planning'​

The sentences are the longest since the introduction by the last government of the new law of conspiracy to cause a public nuisance, in a bid to clamp down on disruptive protests.
The court heard the intention was to block most of the M25, preventing traffic from other roads from joining the motorway.
The action resulted in chaos on the M25 over four successive days, causing nearly 51,000 hours of driver delays, the court heard. The protests closed parts of the motorway in Kent, Surrey, Essex and Hertfordshire.
People missed flights, medical appointments and exams. Two lorries collided, and a police motorcyclist came off his bike during one of the protests on 9 November 2022 while trying to bring traffic to a halt in a “rolling road block”.
Prosecutors alleged the protests led to an economic cost of at least £765,000, while the cost to the Metropolitan Police was put at more than £1.1m.

Correct me if I'm not wrong but aren't the people on these Just Stop Oil protests paid by people directly affiliated with giant oil companies? (Might be a conspiracy thing I heard once) mostly to piss people off and keep them on the oil company side. They're a fucking nuisance regardless I've had a friend blocked because of one group before.

Every rapist should get at least that much.

This crime isn't as bad, but consider the aggravating factors:
1) They cost the government close to $3-4 million USD.
2) They should down a major roadway for four days, which could have caused emergency vehicles precious time, hurting or even killing multiple people. People could lose their jobs, miss important meetings, vital services can get delayed, etc.
3) The defendant disrupted the courtroom multiple times as a stunt, directly contesting the Judge's authority.
4) The defendant tried to interfere with the jury multiple times, trying to get them to ignore the law.

In terms of collateral damage, and the open flaunting of the court and its rules, it only makes sense they got so much prison time.

Last August, some of these activists tried to disrupt Burning Man by blocking the one road to and from the event. They ended up getting roughed up by the Tribal Police of the reservation whose road they were blocking, and then they bitched and moaned about it hard.

Yeah that was a mistake. People think the police in America proper are corrupt? The tribal police really don't give have a single fuck to give. They'll murder you in broad daylight and laugh about it.

What the fuck are these stupid fucks even accomplishing? Defacing valuable artworks? (Fortunately those Van Gogh paintings and the Mona Lisa are behind bullet resistant glass but still). Blocking roads? Disrupting formal events?

I don't care if you want to save the planet (more power to you) but I hate how with every noble cause out there, the grifters will always show up to taint the image of a what should be a noble cause.

I don't think there is anything wrong with saving the planet (it's the only home we got so far) but seeing how organizations like PETA make animal rights activists look bad, it doesn't surprise me that grifter groups like Green Peace or Just Stop Oil have wormed their way into the conversation about climate change. The lesson here to be learned is that grifters suck.

According to them, they're basically getting exactly what they want - notoriety. They've said in the past that they do this shit just to get attention because literally no-one gave a shit before when they used to do normal protests. Of course none of them have yet figured out that all the attention they're getting is negative and is literally doing their cause more harm than good.

Also good news, another trial today and the two dipshits who went after Van Gogh's sunflowers, have been found guilty, and the judge has told them to be prepared for a custodial sentence. Even better, this is the same judge who just jailed the M25 protesters for several years each, so there's a decent chance these numpties get more than a token sentence.
I know they'll never stop this faggotry, but I wonder if this judge actually giving a shit and punishing them might drive them to do it outside of his jurisdiction.


Two Just Stop Oil (JSO) activists who threw soup over Vincent van Gogh's Sunflowers have been found guilty of criminal damage.
Phoebe Plummer and Anna Holland, both 22, launched the contents of two tins of tomato soup on to the painting at the National Gallery in central London, later gluing their hands to the wall beneath it.
The gallery previously said the gold-coloured frame of the glass-covered painting was damaged in the October 2022 attack.
At Southwark Crown Court, Judge Christopher Hehir told the pair to be "prepared in practical and emotional terms to go to prison" when they are sentenced on 27 September.
Judge Hehir said they "came within the width of a pane of glass of destroying one of the most valuable artworks in the world".
He set bail conditions for Plummer, of Clapham in south-west London, and Holland, of Newcastle, which stipulate they must not carry glue, paint or any adhesive substance in a public place, and must not visit any galleries or museums.
Last week, the same judge sentenced five JSO activists to jail terms of between four and five years.
