Ironically, this is an issue largely of the left's making. Their judges largely try to legislate from the bench rather than interpret the law. This is not to say none on the right due, Scalia comes to mind, but largely right wing judges were not the kind to legislate from the bench. So, why do I say the left did it? Well, when you have a force clearly pulling against what the purpose of your office is, the reaction is to pull in the opposite direction. Thus, party line votes.
Maybe the right doesn't legislate from the bench because they're all about preserving stuff, it's the left that wants change.

Am I just some emotionless robot or do people really get this upset over someone they don't even know dying? I understand hysterical women freaking out because they're women, but do mentally well, straight men actually behave like this?
No, this shit is just like when some celeb commits and they're "literally crying and shaking he affected my life so much" they either have the emotional control of toddlers or, just as likely in the days of social media, crave relevance and will keep nothing undefiled to get there.

I always find it so strange how people think that playing by the rules is somehow not playing fair. It isn't like the GOP is even packing the courts or anything by inflating the numbers which they could do/could have done. We desperately need a Constitutional Amendment to permanently fix the number of SCOTUS Justices.
What would be the optimal number of justices for their average work load?

You give them too much credit assuming they show real emotion. They're not sad someone died, they're sad because they're not getting their way.

The number has been 9 since 1869. It doesn't need to be changed and an amendment should be fix it at 9 so any talk of court packing stops for good.

The clerk infrastructure around them grows to whatever size is needed to manage workloads. That isn't really relevant.

The hysteria over one old crone shuffling off the coil amongst the left just shows the religious like nature of the movement.

I honestly haven't seen as much mass hysteria over a death since Princess Di in my country died, my overwhelming memory of her is how annoyed I was that my weekend cartoons were cancelled for round the clock maniacal weeping by the media.

I dont like major decisions left up to clerks.
That how congress works. They dont even read the bills.

Well some of us get excited enough to post Crab Rave and Ding Dong the Witch is Dead, so a reaction disproportionate to its actual effect in life should be expected from them too.

Never said the people celebrating her deaths were jackasses also. Realistically, most of the people talking about it didn't even know who she was a week ago.

Court packing would absolutely disastrous to our democracy.

Turning the Supreme Court to a rubber stamp factory that gets some new employees whenever they disagree with a party that already holds two branches of Government completely obliterates the idea of checks and balances.

I can't believe that the people who always go on about Trump being fascist are advocating that kind of extreme authoritarian power grab without a hint of irony or self awareness.

It's a little thing called projection.

Who is this commanding presence?

No. Dead, and slightly too tan.

No. Dead, and not the real deal.

Mix him with the previous two and you can almost make:

Sci-Fi author and self-proclaimed "political firebrand" Patrick S. Tomlinson!

Who will heed his call? Other than his 47.5k followers, who were not at all amassed through formulaic Trump/woke tweets, who owe him their service.

As expected from a resistance leader, Pat is very, very tough.

Other than comedian Norm MacDonald (long story), does Patrick really have stalkers? Is Patrick "an actual tough guy"?

The answers to all these questions and more can be found in the Patrick "Stealthygeek" Tomlinson thread:
Warning: Can crash certain phone browsers because of amount of content
* Why did Patrick's pregnant wife divorce him and force him to sign away his parental rights?
* Why was he banned from Twitter for ten months and forced to LARP as his cat?
* Why did he pay $5,000 in legal fees to get his account back, minus Verified status, after threatening to fly to their headquarters to speak to the manager?
* Can he really "spoon feed you your own teeth"?
* Is he a fat alcoholic liar in denial?

A lot canbe decided in the lower courts with the SCOTUS only taking highly political / important cases, and further the amendment could always be amended if we needed more. One issue being that I don't really think more Justices would decrease workload since they all have to review each case. Seems like something that could be handled with expanded clerk staff.

I would think 9 would be the easiest to pass in a situation where the Republicans controlled the Presidency and Legislative branch because they could use to power to pack it as leverage to secure their majority with the 9. Otherwise I don't see it getting done. Democrats will pack the courts if they control the Executive and Legislative. Kamala is already on the record indicating she was considering it as early as the primaries.
