A big part of these defamation lawsuits is how it has affected a person financially, and as has been stated several times in this thread, Billy lost multiple public speaking appearances due to Karl's allegations. And the people who canceled on him explicitly stated what amounts to "we are canceling on you because of the accusations regarding Apollo Legend's death by the Karl Jobst videos". This is pretty conclusive evidence that Karl harmed Billy's reputation further than the cheating accusations. There was direct evidence Billy was losing speaking gigs and in effect losing money as a direct result of Karl.

Even if he doesn’t,since Karl is basically Billy’s indentured servant now he can get Karl to say whatever he likes. Personally,I would fly him off to Florida to do a completely innocuous Ad for Rickey’s hot sauce that doesn’t mention the incidents whatsoever.Or either have him literally wear a Rickey’s shirt and hat in all of his videos,never directly mentioning them outside of ad reads for the brand.
One of the biggest things that turned me off speed-running, mainly because my gaming autism manifests to the perfection/100% completion route instead of the absolute fastest. Then you get clipping, glitches, and a number of other things that can skip up to 90% of the game depending on what's the point. Then you watch other speed runners and realize while there are a few who theorize and test and what-not; most of it is just people who never learned how to play the game, trying to recreate what someone already did but faster. Their ego is another problem; someone did the math, proved their work, and this is the correct and only way to play...

While it is possible Karl could have gotten a victory on appeal it's very likely he could have ended up screwing over himself and needing to pay more. Especially since the longer this gets dragged out in court the higher the lawyer fees pile up.
Oh? I skimmed through some apologist website that supports Karl and it said the damages were near the maximum allowed basically. Maybe the lawyer fees were even bigger. That's just depressing in of itself, lawyers man...

Hearing all these stories about speedrunning makes me glad I mainly just follow a small subset of Pokemon solo-run speedrunning. It's fairly chill since they're not trying to break world records, just personal ones, no crazy glitch exploits aside from Gen I badge boosting since it's essentially unavoidable and they'll even shout each other out if a particular runner got a comparably impressive time with a pokemon that they couldn't get.
The high judgement is Karl's idiot tax for doubling down instead of just apologizing and saying he was wrong. Karl made himself look like a vindictive asshole in a case where being a vindictive asshole gets you punished harder. Honestly I think you're kinda underselling that Karl essentially accused Billy of murder on a large stage and people were calling Billy a murderer. That's the kind of thing you should get in trouble for.
