Does Ken Penders own Sally Acorn?

again, he doesn't need to own Sally outright, he owns the stories he wrote with her in them so theyre his to rerelease if he wants. It's sort of a grey area but like I posted way before it's akin to Elliot Maggin owning his Superman novels and getting to rerelease them even though he doesn't own Superman or Lois Lane, or that guy who owned Thunderball getting to make Never Say Never Again even though he didnt own James Bond. It's weird, but he can do it. I Imagine his updates to the art will make all of it worse than it was though, something special to own because of how fucked it is.

That's what I worry about. His art is gradually getting worse and he’s old. So he’s cooked.

Also doesn't she usually wear clothes and isn't she 16?
Only boots and a jacket at most (unless you mean her late redesign, shortly before the comic ended, kek). She was clearly a furrybait for Sonic Satam cartoon and was brought to the Archie comic with minimal changes (worse, she became more and more furry while the guys kept the cartoonish style).

Does Ken Penders own Sally Acorn?

If he did, he'll not be wasting his time with that knockoff Echidna OC Lara-Su character of his, Sally is the female lead of the SatAM cartoon, by far the most high profile from that particular property when it comes to being a character fans still care about. No, he doesn't own her, if he did he would have been spamming content and merchandise based on her from day one.

Sally, as all the SatAM characters belong to Sega.

You have me wondering now. Supposedly Ken's original plan for Archie issue #47 was to kill off Sally permanently. Probably so he could shove one of his own OCs into Sally's role. But if he actually did own the rights to Sally, would he have felt the need to kill her off? Or would we be laughing at badly drawn art of Sally breastfeeding instead of his OCs? Would his remarks about Geoffrey St John taking Sally's virginity be more than just remarks, and would Ken be selling Sally x Geoff porn at furry conventions?

Because unlike Archie, Sega didn't lose their contracts and thus the ability to prove that they retained rights to the characters, not DiC.

Actually, it was because he and the other people working on the comic thought it was going to end soon. The arc in which Ken wanted to permanently kill Sally was called Endgame for that reason.

If the comic had ended on issue 50, and Sally had remained dead, what a bittersweet ending that would have been. Yes, Robotnik is finally defeated, but at the cost of Sonic's love interest, whom he'd supposedly known since childhood? At least a few Sonic autists would have taken some emotional damage in the spring of '97.

Not just that, Sonic barely did anything in said confrontation, his friends did most of the heavy lifting, so the fight felt weak, and inferior compared to the SATAM one anyway (which in turn was quite weak too). Penders had an immense hatred towards Sally, taking a dump on her at every possible chance, and using his OC to diss Sonic and/or Sally whenever possible.

They did:

My first exposure to the furry phenomenon was when I was like 6 and I googled Sonic the Hedgehog and found one of these kinds of websites dedicated to some random character. I clicked around and saw some sexual picture of tails or something and I went "yuck, they're not supposed to do that, they're cartoon characters" and closed the page. I was wise beyond my years.

Hey, that's a more realistic take from a kid, especially when you compare it to the hypothetical: 'I shouldn't look at this stuff, but maybe I’ll join a Discord server, lie about my age, and look at Gooner art of Sonic while being grossed out by it.' Zoomers and the newest generations are more likely to lie about their ages because they grew up with the internet. In contrast, many '90s kids didn't have working internet until the 2000s and were generally smart enough to avoid that kind of content. The fact is, the modern internet is 'brain rot,' and many kids are suffering from it.

For someone who supposedly "hates" Sally, he sure loved to talk and write rapey sex-pest scenarios involving her and his skunk self insert.

It also cannot be understated that Ken is a petty asshole that wanted to undermine other people's creations just so he could push his own. I think it was more a case of "sour grapes" because he knew he couldn't take over ownership of the characters so why bother elevating or developing it in a positive and meaningful way.

Probably the second. Can't forget this asshole sabotaged Ben Hurst, thus stopping Sonic SATAM from getting a conclusion, and then having the nerve to try to pass a blatant copy as his own creation.

That's probably why the sudden male heir who no-one knew about that completely invalidated Sally, was written by him. Flynn tried to make-do by having said guy be completely inept, but that felt like a stopgap at best.

yeah, this was over dial up at my mom's work office, there was an extra computer in the room that I usually watched tv or played with toys and shit in. I'd get on and look shit I liked up on Google, and had some kid's pages favorited.

It's actually really funny to me, my vivid foundational memory of the internet, is looking up sonic, and the looney tunes two separate times, seeing furry porn, not really being upset, intrigued or even offended. I just thought it was stupid, and specifically can remember just thinking to myself, "what? No. Bugs Bunny and Tails don't have penises! They're cartoon characters for kids!" and I decided to look up Batman and Superman instead, and didnt see any cocks. so I decided to not look up animal cartoons I liked anymore and instead just look up superheroes.

Awesome that explains the new Superman avatar you got from the new movie that just came out.

Part of the low-key fascination with this thread for me has always been just "what the fuck is WRONG wtih this guy?" For a cow so relatively low-key he is massively weird. He kind of reminds me of Kengle or Chris if you'd let them have some small level of talent.

people say that all the time, but I don't really get those kind of vibes from him, personally. he comes across to me less as an autistic loser who made it in the smallest way possible, and moreso like a really out of touch old guy loser who just thinks his work is much better and important than it is and is always 10 steps behind whatever he's doing.

people always talk about his self-insert characters, but I really don't see his work like that at all, it's more soapbox-y mouthpiece characters than any projections of him himself, moreso just shit he thinks. and the reason that's so funny is he takes his work on throwaway licensed children's media tie-ins as he was out there trying to educate the youth or something. It's actually imo funnier than a guy who puts himself in everything. he radiates ultimate boomer energy.

It's crazy to think just how wrong they were about that. They had no idea that another 200+ issues, including many spin offs, are to be made, and for the vast majority of those issues nothing really happens until some glubshitto takes over 150ish issues in and tries to reconcile the nonsense with an actual structured narrative. That's why the Archie run fascinates me so much. It just kept going despite being far past it's expiration and as a by product it strung together the most bizarre narrative and world to be put to any medium in an official capacity. It's THE example of why you shouldn't just extend a story that already ended just because you can. Then again, that's the very reason why I'm so fascinated by it. I like to refer to Archie Sonic as the "The Room" of comic books. It's like if that movie just inexplicably kept making sequels to the point it becomes it's own cinematic universe filled with one off characters and story beats that never get resolved. And all you can only think is "why and how the hell does this thing just keep going?"

There were times that the comic was to be cancelled/closed, but it didn't happen until the very end as it kept making money for Archie, somehow. It was in a dire need of a reboot, but when it was done it was too little and too late. It's also a prime example of things that happen in comics but made worse due to how blunt they are, such as using characters to talk about a real world issue with the subtlety of a brick (like Penders talking about drugs by killing a character off-screen to show that, or the dragon of the group being in an abusive relationship*), characters using their OCs to diss Sonic and his friends (mostly Penders' doing), other writers making the former act retarded to own Penders (like Sonic acting like a manwhore and then retconning he was totally his evil twin from another dimension), the infamous slap that killed the main character's relationship happening just because, etc.
It's a carousel of bad writing and drama, and Sonic characters from multiple media and settings being crammed together in a space they barely fit. Flynn tried to fix this mess, but his solutions involve immense drama for the sake of drama (going as far as to have certain characters act suddenly stupid, evil or both), randomly killing characters no-one cares about, and so on. Then the reboot happened and everyone was reduced to their most basic elements, but hey, Flynn included a random, unnamed military commander niggress because PC stuff (likely because the comic had near-zero blacks, not counting Knuckles).

*Kinda funny how the LITERAL DRAGON of the group was barely used, despite being you know, a dragon, because she would overshadow the main cast. The party ever got a super-plane stolen from the X-Men to make her even more redundant.
