It makes a bit more sense if you consider people like this were in charge of Archie - http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/archie-boss-calls-male-employees-penis-article-1.1534462
"[T]he word ‘penis’ became somewhat of a campaign slogan and her preferred method of referring to employees in lieu of their names,” their new filing says."

I remember reading about Penders last year and from what I could gather he does have the right to use his true and honest original characters in name but he isn't allowed to draw them in the same style as the Sonic character Knuckles anymore hence the new look but that might have just been speculation.
This actually explains so much about the weird conclusion to Archie.
Spoiler - Archie dies after taking a bullet for his gay senator friend who happened to be an anti-gun policy advocate. No I did not just make that up. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_with_Archie

I'll admit, back in the day I was such a sperg for the Sonic comics, especially anything Knuckles-related; I genuinely enjoyed all of the "lore" Penders built around the echidna race back when I was 9-10. I still have most of the issues from the Penders era of the comics in sleeves and backing boards and I'm still considering eBaying them.

To see how much of an exceptional individual the writer of a good chunk of my favorite issues just absolutely tickles me the only way that finding out your favorite comics from childhood were essentially some old sperg's fanfiction could.

Archie Sonic comics were the ones with the dragon whose boyfriend abused her, yeah?

i've never actually read them, i doubt they were released in my country. but oh the legends i have heard...

What I don't understand is - what techniques is this guy using for those godawful 3d pictures? I have seen people use things like Zbrush for still illustrations but rarely are they this bad. Am I missing something?

Ken Penders didn't actually make the 3D images. Someone named Kevin Knowles did. The copyright info written on the images makes it a big ambiguous, since Penders lists his name first on them rather than the actual artist's name coming first. Then again, iirc Penders got pissy at someone on twitter for drawing fanart of his characters and not having "COPYRIGHT KEN PENDERS" written anywhere on it.

Here is another piece of the artist's work:

Does Ken actually work anywhere now? His name is so infamous in the industry that I'd question the sanity of any comic company that has him work there.

If that's the case, then he needs better artist, because if this is the best he can do:

Then he needs artistic help, and fast.

Also, I'm half-tempted to call Archie a lolcow company now, given how that co CEO's bitching about her calling people "Penis". Doesn't matter how high up in the corporate food chain you are, sexual harassment is still sexual harassment. And no amount of bullshit excuses can change that.
Looking at that image, it looks like Penders tried to make something for Second Life. I've seen better 3D Sonic OC renders that didn't look like something from the 90's.

KILL IT! KILL IT WITH FIRE!
Kill it with and spread the ashes to the four corners of the earth. It makes a Revolution 60 character look better in comparison.

I'm surprised he didn't list Poser as one of the programs used. It looks like it comes from the deepest depths of it.

Who in the nine hells thought that model looked good? It looks like it's appraising my soul before consuming it, and it likes what it sees. :c

Life with Archie is different than regular Archie. It was an alternate universe type comic. Regular Archie, the long running one, is still being corny as fuck last I heard.

I don't care that he sued to get ownership of the characters he created while working on the comic (that's what Archie gets for not crossing their t's and dotting their i's. I find it hard to believe that they lost a contract and couldn't find another copy), but what I do find baffling is that he still thinks that people would be interested in these characters once they are almost completely rewritten to disavow their connection to the Sonic comic.

Gotta love how they essentially trolled their readers when it came to the part with Betty and Veronica.

That artwork is so horrid, especially that diva one. I can't believe this guy got hired to do anything in the profession he worked in.
