The thing about this paintings is that you know old painters used to get killed or assaulted for painting a subject in a negative light especially if they were rich or powerful, (and to afford a portrait, especially from a famous or known artist, you would be) so the dude probably looked worse.

Like, before photography, where yoou cant hide your flaws and especially before the printing press where images and text were easily replicated, painters who would paint images of powerful people were valued. Its, basically, where, ' do you know who i am' originated. Becahse used to be people didnt see or know their rulers, esp. outside of paintings and public media.
