It was really, really stupid and unsurprisingly it went down very poorly among Transformers fan. Old-school guys said that it was nonsense for transformers to have a gender identity or sex anyway (because they don't reproduce sexually) and troons said that it was problematic for the first trans-transformer to be a lunatic psycho bitch. Either way, I'm not sure if it's still considered canon because I don't keep up with Transformers fandoms.
I believe that one of the original transformers writers was against there being male and female robots from the get go, since they're, well, robots.
