Hmm. My guesses yesterday were paperwork/title problems or code violations, and I'm gonna stick with those. Actually, I'll go a step further and say that none of this is the mortgage company's "fault", because they're almost certainly doing exactly what they SHOULD be doing post housing-market crash. I've never bought a farm, but I'd be very willing to assume that the same legal issues that you have to deal with when buying a house are magnified by buying a larger plot of land. Say, land boundaries for example. That's easy on a quarter acre, because you can see every corner from every spot on the lot. Now imagine doing that on 150 acres or whatever. It all has to be surveyed, it all has to be legal, AND it all has to match the official records. In the event of a dispute, one has to be changed to match the other, the plot or the record. Tax statements and calculations are almost certainly another thing, farm taxes and subsidies are ridiculously complicated, especially if they own this current farm. Or how about water rights? That's another consideration. Really, the more I look into this, the stupider it looks for anyone to be complaining that the date keeps getting pushed back. This is the best-possible scenario for success - for everything to be properly legal, inspected, and filed. This is the work that is required by law, and what any mortgage lender is going to do to cover their ass in what is a high-risk, low-reward investment for them.

In the meantime, I wonder if this program has anything to do with this farm purchase?
