Donations made to GoFundMes are considered "personal gifts", so they don't count as income and the paypigs don't get to claim them as "charitable donations" on their taxes.
I just checked our national tax dept's site. Gifts from non-family for events like birthdays etc. are not taxed as long as they don't surpass "the amount usual for such an event". It goes on to explain there is no fixed definition for that limit and to ring if you're in doubt.
However, for personal donations from crowdfunding sites, you have to register your fundraiser ahead of its start with the national fundraising board and have to declare it as income.
Our tax department seems to have noticed how much money goes around in these "gifts". Would be wise if the IRS came to the same conclusion.
