Probably, I've only asked that because I'm a wee bit biased - for obvious reasons, Telegram is also very popular among Russian-speaking audiences, and audiences who can speak Russian but would rather not. You know.

Telegram is as compromised as WhatsApp is, it's just that only tech illiterates (with it not necessarily being their fault, I don't expect a grandma whose grandchildren are teaching to use the family whastapp group to understand proper opsec) srill trust the latter, while Telegram was for a while assumed to be safe since they were very bombastic with their such secure much private ads.

At this point if you were in an emergency situation in a free speech hostile location, your safest bet is probably to use something self hosted, but I don't know jack about that. Null sure does.

I tried Signal out of curiosity and what I can tell you at least is that the call quality is dope and the application is kind of uncomfortable because of all the added security (can't be used on multiple devices, need to verify contacts by scanning qrs). The cost of the service is cheap as dirt though.
