The purpose of this thread is for people to post images/art, sound clips or anything that can be used in future Kiwi Doom projects. The idea is to gradually accumulate assets and over time get tons of custom(retarded) content, unique for this site. Once there's a new project, everything here can be used by the mappers immediately, thus saving time.
This thread will probably be pretty slow so if you are interested in this and/or want to contribute at a later time, don't forget to FOLLOW or BOOKMARK this thread. It will always be open for submissions.
So, have you made something based on your favorite cow, made a new hamster for Null, created a funny meme or do you have some funny sound clips? Post it here. Have you seen someone else make something that would fit here? Tell them to post it here too.
The first thing people usually think of when it comes to custom content for Doom are textures and monsters. Textures are simple enough, just create a 128p image using the Doom colors and you're done. Custom monster sprites is a whole other question though. For those you need to create 1 sprite for each frame of animation and for each of the 8 directions(most smaller monsters though have right and left mirrored for a total of 5 direction).
It's an enormous task. The Cyber Demon have 73 sprites for example. But if you have a good workflow for this and want to do it, go for it.
A much more common thing though, is to do small edits to existing sprites. This is a much more manageable approach. If you want to see some examples of this, go to realm667.com.
I realize many people want to see their favorite cows face on a monster but a problem with this is that most monsters have such low resolution that details become almost impossible to see. This is an other thing to keep in mind when making sprites/textures.
Are you an illustrator/graphical designer or similar and want to contribute but don't know how to pixel art? Don't worry. If you make something good I will try my best(and as time permits) to convert the images, but I'm only one person. So if you know how to convert your image to the Doom resolution and palette it would be very helpful. I will attach the palette to the bottom of this post.
Just keep in mind that in the original Doom, graphics had a max size of 128p height. That's not the case anymore but it's still the base line for most things. So try to keep your detailing really defined and not too small.
Sounds also adds lot of personality to custom maps. Do you know how to make a cow sound like a demon or know how to make some nice ambient sounds for example? Then please consider contributing too.
What to submit.
We're using GZDoom and that is a source port that is very lenient when it comes to adding custom assets. Here are some ideas of what else you can add.- Graphics – Textures, sprites, backgrounds, UI, fonts, edits of existing assets, simple animations
- Sounds – Effects, clips, voice samples
- Music – Your own or otherwise hard to find music
- Custom Things – Monsters, decorations, pickups, weapons, special effects
- Scripts – Cool, dumb, useful stuff for maps
- Voxels – Have some fitting models? Share them and don't forget to use the Doom palette
- OpenGL stuff – Shaders, materials, 3d models(heresy!)
- Shit I didn't consider – That too
If you are worried that this will just create pile of random shit you're probably right. But my thought is to collect as much stuff as possible and then let the project managers pick and choose what to use.
About AI created stuff.
Since it's so easy to create lots of it, only submit the absolute best and most fitting result(both for images and sounds/music). A plus if you also clean them up before submitting and if they actually look like something from Doom rather than the current Bing trends.Things to consider.
Finally, remember what site you're on and take advantage of it. Submissions that mock or heckle the “Current Thing” and/or protected classes or peoples will get priority. Stuff that will make people seethe like you couldn't believe. Just try to make it a bit funny and clever(and not creating trouble for Null).Of course, regular Doom assets, like standard textures, are welcome too, but this is not meant to be a replacement pack for the default Doom assets. It's more of an extension. So try to make something new and really, really fucking retarded.
Have Fun!
Read this before submitting.
- Don't post other peoples work without giving credit.
- Don't post content that is easily available on other sites without a relevant reason.
- Post your submission in a new post, don't attach the files to a post with other discussions.
- Add a small description of the content you post and if necessary, some comments how to use it.
- If you submit multiple files, or if it's a file format not supported by the forum, zip it. Make sure you separate files into different zips based on content type. Like if you submit textures and sprites,
then you separate them into 2 zips. - For custom sounds, music, voxels, shaders etc, please check the ZDoom wiki for info about file types and other technical info. zdoom.org/wiki/
- If you submit artwork, please try to shrink the image size as much as possible. Don't post 4k monsters.
- If you submit multiple game-ready image assets in a zip, please also post a screenshot preview of your work so people don't have to download the file to see what you've made.
- Submit custom scripts in a wad with an playable example of their use and if necessary, some comments on how to use it.
- You don't have to create your own sprites to make custom things. Use any you see fit, either from this pack or other sites.
- 3d models are usually not a part of Doom maps. So if you want to submit some, make sure they look like something that fits in Doom.
