I think the Shaner thread taught a lot of people a lot of things that they did not want to know about themselves nor did they want to admit was true, and because of this the thread went to hell because people wouldn't fucking contain their autism.
I had the best time keeping up with that thread, like taking pictures of the railroads around the city I lived in to post to Shaner and make him think we were infiltrating all of the rail yards. Then, when I fell behind in the thread people kept taunting/encouraging me even though I couldn't keep up with being at work and the thread growing pages at a time.
@Gook Choy and @Pocket_Sand! were hilarious, and then of course because their stories were getting attention there came a ton of me-too's who dicked it all up.

Yeah I know the feels. I got a couple of direct responses from Shaner in the early days, and then didn't check it for a day or two and suddenly it had metastasized 50 pages and I balked at reading through that much autism.

I'm pretty torn on the whole Shaner thread as well. I mean, I credit it from getting me out of lurking into more of an active (shit)poster, but the thread did disintegrate into an autistic mess. Shaner never really evolved from his "dox everyone" stage and he just kept poking that autistic hornet's nest. People were probably just more dumbfounded that he believed all of the shit they were telling him.

From my point of view in the Shaner thread, a lot of people came to me acting like I was the next Clyde Cash, and asking, "how do I trigger Shaner?" or "Can I have a story to tell about Shaner?" (No shit, these were actual questions people asked me.
I'm not, nor was I ever, the next Clyde Cash. I happen to be a guy who very idly lurked on this forum, and one day saw that there was a thread on an imbecile that I actually knew, created an account while giggling maniacally to myself etc.
Thing is, it's not as if I had exclusive insider information on the workings of Shaner's world. I know stories that anyone in the industry knows, I just happened to work in the industry, and be aware of the farms. I was thrilled to see he finally did something stupid enough to warrant the attention of a group other than foamers and train spergs and even more thrilled when he showed up, then everyone could see just how stupid he really was... and that was the problem. He's really that stupid.
He's so stupid that people immediately realized what an easy target he was, and the hard core weening began. Tons of people wanted the spotlight for being Shaner's #1 All Time Troll, without realizing that it really took no effort to troll Shaner, and all tried way to hard, resulting in Shaner being overwhelmed by trolls (according to Shaner himself in conversations he had with @PropaneAccesories there were at one point, no less than 15 trolls actively involved in Shaner's FB pages and various other things). I have no idea what the various admins and Null had to put up with in regards to all the fuckery surrounding Shaner and his trolls.
I still occasionally see the random message asking how I got Shaner to do the things he did. I really didn't, if you look, in 970 pages of content, I posted a grand total of around 110 times in that thread, including one line responses and the various insults I flung at him. Not really a master troll in any sense, and certainly not the work of a dedicated Clyde Cash.
I do understand why the "notice me senpai" and the "hey dox me LenLen" went on. It was a riot at first, but so many people tried doing it, it rapidly became unfunny and tedious, and the thread moved at such a fast pace that it was hard for people to keep up. It seems to me, however, that the people who objected most to that behavior were people who had nothing to do with the thread. My rambling 2 cents
