“You Know What to Do”: Proactive Detection of YouTube Videos Targeted by Coordinated Hate Attacks

"Also note that /pol/, though a very good example of a tightknit community used to coordinate and disrupt other social groups, is not the only community responsible for performing raids against YouTube videos. Other Web communities, e.g,. Reddit [54] or Kiwi Farms [20] also regularly take part in raiding activity"

As part of future work, we plan to use deep-learning methods to fuse audio, video, and metadata into a single classifier. We also plan to look into raids from other communities, such as Reddit, Gab.ai, and Kiwi Farms.

Finally, it might perhaps be tempting to dismiss the relatively low occurrence of raids, vis-a-vis the number of ` YouTube videos posted every day, as being a niche problem. On the contrary, harassment and bullying on YouTube are widely recognized as a serious issue by authorities on the matter [47], and news reports are filled with ghastly stories [50] and advice on how to deal with hateful and harassing YouTube comments in particular [15, 26].

On the contrary, we make a great target for being an internet boogeyman. We're large, well-know, and harmless. The media salivates over attacking stuff like that in unison and leaving actual threats to stay in the dark.

This forum is not harmless. Pretending otherwise is disingenuous. In actuality this place is very dangerous. And not just to the shitheads that get mocked.

We are entering an era where there is a devoted group of people that wish to conflate words with physical violence. That to say mean things about someone is the same as physically attacking them. Consider the full ramifications of that. If someone is physically attacking you, you have the right to defend yourself. To use violence to defend yourself. Worse the State, which is supposed to have a monopoly on violence, must prevent you from saying the mean words, and thinking the wrong things that are akin to physical violence.

It is naive to assume this place is harmless. It is a source of immense harm. It's very existence is a mockery to the ideals the kindly inquisitors behind this paper are trying to advance. If given the power they would shut this place down In a heart beat and send Null to the gulag for reeducation. This is a silly place that was created to make fun of people on the Internet. But the inquisition has no humor, and it certainly has no room for having it's beliefs mocked.

Too bad they can't read. We don't just mock and doc feminists, we also have threads dedicated to satanic Nazis, incels, nice guys, etc. If I was an editor, journalist, or tabloid with a feminist agenda I'd milk those threads dry. Same goes for left leanging autists if I worked for Fox News or Breitbart.

For once I'd like to read a well researched paper on this site and/or CWC.

Well to be clear on one thing which some people seem to be missing, the point of the paper isn't so much about at what "causes" attacks but rather building an algorithm/system to detect videos which are likely to be "raided":

I'd have to read the entire thing to fully understand it, but just wanted to make the point about what the paper is primarily about.

However its still funny that they call KF a source of these "raids":
View attachment 464778

One thing I'm not clear on is whether the source of the attacks is actually important/relevant to their research or if they purely went through YouTube videos and used their own classification of what they consider to be a "raid".

If "raids" aren't caused by external parties then they're not actually raids and all this machine learning system does is detect videos which are likely to trigger autism on the internet. If that's the case then it still may be impressive (if it actually even exists beyond being just a research paper).

(again I'd have to read the entire thing to speak more on it, but I'm just throwing my thoughts out there)

EDIT:
The usage of keywords on videos is interesting and I did speed read past a part which mentioned using auto captioning services. This is actually interesting as its something
I experimented with on DarksydePhil's streams. He usually rambles on for like a fucking solid hour every day, so I started using automatically generated subtitle files to determine what shit he was talking about each day... something like this:
upload_2018-3-14_13-36-19-png.402349

Based upon that you could tell when he was sperging about particular topics, so it stands to reason that by identifying the content of a video itself or even the outward-facing content (just the title/thumbnail/keywords) you could recognize videos which are likely to experience bouts of autism.

Google already uses similar concepts to identify videos which would be problematic for advertisers.

Sure, there will be people that troll from this site, but imo most of the raiding would come from a-logging 3rd party visitors. I'm sure both sides have used the information we've gathered.

A culture war is factional. Distinctions don't matter and neither does nuance. It also needs to be remembered that the intersectional types (the ones behind this shitty paper) are the aggressors in the culture war. Their goal is to either coopt or destroy institutions they feel are a threat to what they perceive as good and just in the world.

4chan absolutely launched raids on YouTube as part of their participation in the culture war. Kiwifarms, while not an active attacking force is a den of problematic opinions, and the information we archive around here is super double bad for preventing upstanding and progressively oppressed transsxuals like Wu from reaching the halls of power in Congress. Thus we are also an enemy institution, that if we cannot be coopted (obviously) must therefore be destroyed.

The strange thing is? Had this website been around in the 90's pretty much everyone here would most likely have been shitting on crazy evangelicals, closeted homosexual republicans pretending to not have "the gay" and attention whore women who got to have bad sex with the President. It is a testament to the times that this website, which I would argue is actually anarchistic (no rules at all, man) is considered a den of right wing authoritarian fascists.

Gotta agree. 90s-'07 evangelists were basically Christian SJWs. I remember Fox News flipped out about 4chan and there was this annoying blog that thought that everything nerdy was satanic. Fa/tg/uys loathed these kind of social conservatives in particular because they'd try to co-opt nerdom while slandering nerds as heathen man-beast rapists. Most forums at the time were not fond of fanatical evangelists much in the same way that many dislike SJWs today. Imo that is part of the reason gamers and later other nerds actually stood up to SJWs because they had already dealt with social crusaders from the right.

My current hypothesis for why the internet started to hate SJWs more than neo-cons goes like this: Normies got smart phones and used the internet more. Then some of those younger normies were on the far left and tried to one up each other in the oppression olympics till we got all those damned Tumblrisms. Then these SJWs thought they were hot shit, so they try to tell everyone what to do. This inevitably just pissed off most of the oldfags.

It's certainly interesting. But still a bit frightening to me.

I wonder what criteria they would plug into this thing? Dangerhair, blacks, fat, women, LGBTLMNOP++. If you're going to upload to Youtube sooner or later you're going to get some "mean" comments. Because that's the internet. It's not a raid when a few people downvote your video and say you look fat. When have any of these so-called raids taken place lately? Would they consider the mass downvoting of the Ghostbusters trailer a raid?

This just feels like a sneaky way of making sure youtube users only view (((approved content)))
If a video blows up overnight it might be considered as a result of a raid. Unless the algorithm checks and sees it's a video about Mickey Mouse murdering children, Gay guys kissing lesbians or dogs saying "I'm with HER"

Smart enough to typeset a paper in TeX, dumb enough to not know how to cite properly

K. Farms. Kiwi farms. https://kiwifarms.net/, 2018.

Who is this K. Farms character? If this were an academic paper acceptable at even the undergrad level you would provide actual examples instead of just citing the homepage to a website. If this was for anything more advanced then you wouldn't be citing fucking forum boards at all. "take our word for it" is not a good modus operandi if you plan to write academic papers.

A few notes:
  • All look more NEET than any school shooter to have blessed the pages of these forums
  • Zero females. Sexism in the science and research fields in endemic and as kfarmers we should come together to make a special machine learning engine which can detect the content of a research paper to identify whether the writers are NEET or sexist/part of the patriarchy.

Did you just assume their gender? That's a hate attack.

What a vapid, stupid, useless waste of time. I can think of better topics to research than 'ebil trolls on the internet say mean things in the YouTube comments section.'
Have they seen how much of a cesspit the comments usually are (on really exceptional videos, at least)?

Wait-

Is this the academic equivalent of a shitpost?
