Final Fantasy XVI Dev Has A Terrible Answer For Why The Game Is So White

Naoki Yoshida feels that racial diversity would be a violation of 'narrative boundaries'

Two weeks ago, Square Enix released a new story trailer for its upcoming RPG, Final Fantasy XVI. There’s just one noticeable problem—there doesn’t seem to be a single non-white character in it. So IGN asked producer Naoki Yoshida about whether or not the game would feature any Black people or other people of color. Unfortunately, his response made me go “Yikes” in real life.

Yoshida explained that the fantasy world of Valisthea was based on medieval Europe, and they wanted to limit the world culturally and geographically. “Valisthea was never going to realistically be as diverse as say a modern-day Earth…or even Final Fantasy XIV,” he said, as if he was being asked to incorporate every race on the entire planet. “Ultimately, we felt that while incorporating ethnic diversity into Valisthea was important, an over-incorporation into this single corner of a much larger world could end up causing a violation of those narrative boundaries we originally set for ourselves.”

Which begs the question: Why did they enforce a “whites-only” boundary in the first place?

After acknowledging that the real world is more diverse than Valisthea, he continued, “The story we are telling is fantasy, yes, but it is also rooted in reality.” Which is it, Yoshida? You can’t say that your fictional world isn’t bound to reality, and then use reality to explain why Black people can’t exist in Valisthea. Pick a struggle and stick with it, please.

What’s really frustrating about all of this is that Black and brown people have always existed in medieval Europe. If the creative leadership had done more research or checked their biases, then they might have noticed that Black people have been living in Britain for two thousand years. Or that some Black Europeans were canonized in the Holy Roman Empire. Or realized that Iberia was under Islamic rule for approximately 500 years. Instead of a realistic imagining of medieval Europe, we got FFXVI instead.

I emailed Square Enix to ask how it decided on whether or not a story element violated the developers’ “narrative boundaries,” and I’ll let you know once I’ve gotten a response.

I just rewatched the latest trailer, the one embedded above, and saw a giant winged lady throw ice shards. Apparently that’s not too over-the-top for fantasy realism, but bringing in real people from different races is a step too far. Localization director Michael-Christopher Koji Fox told IGN that the game drew inspiration from Game of Thrones. But even GoT had Black side characters (albeit represented very poorly). FFXVI might be worse about representation than one of the most white-bread shows on prestige television.

So why did the developers decide to include only white characters in the trailer? Yoshida has an answer that sounds entirely like a non-answer. “It can be challenging to assign distinctive ethnicities to either antagonist or protagonist without triggering audience preconceptions, inviting unwarranted speculation, and ultimately stoking flames of controversy,” he told IGN.

I believe that the developers can overcome that challenge without blowing up the internet. If the AAA blockbuster God of War: Ragnarök can feature a Black Angrboda as a major character in its Norse mythology, then a totally made-up world can do the same. Especially if the developers are looking to make Final Fantasy into a modern franchise that feels fresh to newcomers to the series.

These new quotes make me feel very cynical about Yoshida’s comments from a previous interview. In August, he said that he wanted to revitalize the Final Fantasy series, which had become mired in its own longstanding tradition. “In terms of whether Final Fantasy is successfully adapting to industry trends, I believe the series is currently struggling,” he said in the interview with Inverse. You know what doesn’t help with trying to make Final Fantasy not feel like it’s over 30 years old? Giving fans an all-white cast that runs counter to both industry standards and actual history.

For all that Yoshida is lauded for being the man who saved the Final Fantasy franchise, his creativity is also limited by a genre that has never been fair to Black and brown fans around the world. FFXVI may be the most “mature” game in the series, but its outlook on human history is a step backward for modern JRPGs.

From the trailer this might be the first non-remake FF game worth playing in ages.

Have to hope my 3060 is up the task 8 months from now.
Unless you were planning on running the game on ultra, it'll be more than enough. My 2070 Super will probably be fine on medium-high settings at 1080p.

FFXIV already caters to an already degenerate fanbase. I question how many people actually play the game versus those who use it as the gay tranny “poc” weirdo virtual dollhouse that it has become. Go play that game.

His game, his choice. If he wants to leave out dark-skinned characters, whatever. What is actually the big deal about this?

I play it for the content and not the catgirl ERP. where is your god now

unfortunately I share a data center with the unofficial ERP server. I was in a raid static with a bunch of them and it was an experience. they were really nice and cool people, but they all had model/posing mods and there was a channel in their Discord server that was all pictures of their characters e-fucking and shit. the real creepy part was a bunch of them were Roegadyn dudes (the big muscle guys) and they were apparently all e-fucking each other? idk man. they were good raiders and chill people and I had fun playing with them, and they kept it all out of raid chat

FFXIV does not actively cater to these people. SE has a policy (that applies generally) that whatever weird or annoying shit you do on your own is fine as long as you're not bothering anybody with it. for example a lot of the crazy shit people do with the housing system involves intentionally breaking the game by glitching objects into the wall or onto surfaces and shit, which is technically against the TOS, but the devs don't care if you do that cause it's not interfering with anybody else's fun. the same goes for gameplay mods, like for DPS meters - if you have a DPS meter for yourself and that's it, you'll never get punished for it. but if you're going into random groups and being a huge asshole about people's DPS numbers (like people commonly do in WoW, lol) you're likely to get a slap on the wrist cause the devs don't want that shit in their game. the "adult" mods, i.e. gluing a horse cock onto your catgirl, are likewise not actively policed due to this policy. however, there was recently a crackdown on people advertising their catgirl strip clubs and e-brothels on the party finder (public party recruitment list) because so many people were clogging up the list with it that it was getting really fucking annoying

I'm not sure what it is that made SJWs so diehard convinced there were black people running all over in Medieval times. Society was kind enough to let the whites barely survive, what makes you think Africans would have been normal citizens?
I'd say I'm a diversityfag, but at least where it makes sense. I don't see Kotaku squawking about how Wakanda didn't have enough white people. Seems to me they want to push Europeans out of their own history instead of... I dunno making media that features African history? It's still not very common. And lol, gotta love the subtle push they're always making into complaining about how problematic Asians and Latinos are.
tldr; It was never about diversity, 'twas about black supremacy. And it's being pushed mostly by white libs (although an Asian SJW like this article's writer is a rarity). Pathetic.

"Why is the game only white people?!?!" they screamed to a race of people they see as their lessers.

Just say you don't play Japanese video games, retard. They're basically always "white", because Caucasians are "exotic" to them, and 99% of the series is Euro centered lmaolmao

Also, the whole pale skin = beauty thing, that extends to their beauty products.

The Final Fantasy XIV team has been caught engaging in racism. The XIV character, Y'sholta used to be completely dark head-to-toe. Until the Shadowbringers expansion, she was always dark skinned. She has steadily lost her color overtime and the autistic coomer playerbase noticed immediately.

View attachment 3827661
Then suddenly dev art now has her light-skinned and pale. The excuses from the dev team have been "she's ill" (ok fair enough) but also "she has spent a lot of time indoors and lost her tan".

View attachment 3827667
Ok so tans fade within days, so why is it they are now in Endwalker expansion and Y'shtola is still white? Why is Y'shtola also depicted as lightskinned in merch? They didn't like having a dark skinned catgirl waifu be the "representative" protagonist for XIV.

It's simple. The Japanese don't like niggers. Dark skin is just a fetish for degenerates. Japanese women with light skin are valued more than those without. The Asian cosmetics industry is the likely cause, but this culture of light skin being "ideal beauty" spans hundreds to thousands of years.

What's really fucking gay is that the XIV team is trying to pretend they're not racist. "oohh noo a-me-ri-kan, we isu notu waisis, she jus no havu tanu" They don't want niggers. Simple as.
Y'shtola was never black in the "true" sense of the word - she was just tanned. There's a whole Japanese subculture surrounding girls with dark tans, and that's what Y'shtola was.

Canonically - she also starts out as White Mage adjacent in ARR - outside often and dealing with elementals/nature and such. She picks up Black Mage skills and starts spending a bunch of time indoors reading books, until Shadowbringers where she's in a literal coma (indoors) for a huge period of time (months at least).

Her losing her tan makes sense (and it's a weirdly specific detail, but...) and it's not like they made Barret white or anything.

The fact that they do this in a game like FF14 is fucking dumb. There are all shades and cultures and it's actually handled quite competently. You have races that are blatantly non-human, including 8-foot-tall tiger-men, 7-foot-tall amazonian pirate women and the big daddies who love them, mercantile desert dwarves, steppe culture dragon-people, backstabbing aristocratic elves, CAT PUNS, and Bunnies, and that's just shit you run into in the base game and heavensward. The game covers a dizzying array of cultures from countless angles and does a really good job of portraying their good sides and bad sides.

It is one of the most inclusive games I have ever fucking seen, and the fact that this hack is trying to claim it isn't is the funniest shit I've seen in quite a while, I'm glad they're getting put on blast over shit like this.

I've already been tired of western game journos for a long time now but if I wasn't before I sure would be after the double whammy of this mess and the journos who are turning it into a political issue that Bayonetta 3 messed with their alphabet soup headcanons.

Lmao get fucked. Glad Yoshi P decided to tell this dumb faggots to piss off I can do what I want. I wish more devs did this, because the fatigue from devs wanting to virtue signal is strong for me. Plus I'm tired of seeing darkies in my media.
Only recent game I've played where seeing all kinds of races in one place that made sense was Dying Light 2, where the setting is somewhere around Turkey and it's the last big city to not fall to infection. So of course, you're going to get refugees from everywhere, especially Europe.

Even the Nips know that it's not worth it to bow to SJW retards and their fetisization of Niggers. Whites and Japanese have done more than any other race to build our modern world. That's why the Woketards try so hard to undermine those achievements by trying to insert darkies into places in history where they don't belong.

Would you call these characters "black" though? Is Yoruichi a black woman?
Japanese black characters are either whites with black skin, burned out vets like Dutch from Black Lagoon, or classy Jazz bar running motherfuckers, like every black guy in an Platinum game. Their Platonic Ideal black man is Billy Dee Williams.

The story isn't about XIV (14), it's about XVI (16) - which isn't out yet but is set in fake fantasy Europe.

There just aren't any prominent black people in any of the XVI trailers but there's really only a small handful of them currently. Kotaku is getting bent out of shape over a game that isn't even released yet.

XIV being one of the more diverse/inclusive games apparently means 0 to Kotaku because they're trying to stir up drama pre-release for XVI.
