Lame Deer Advice Wanted - Advice for a lame deer, not lame advice for a deer.

I ran across a three-legged buck this morning within a 100m, and line-of-sight, of my neighborhood. I can't tell how recent the injury is and if this is something it just lives with, or if it's on its last legs (so to speak). I kinda feel like doing something about it but not sure what. Not much point in calling Game & Fish on Christmas day. I know my dog would love to have a rotting carcass on our morning route but I have my reservations. I have "horse pills" but it's too close to houses for gunfire.

Bad advice is welcome since I probably won't do anything at all.

There's a limit to how much deer shit my dog can eat . . . I think.

You could try to chase it away from the houses and then shoot it. Or you could call up your local forest ranger so he can deal with it, pretty sure those guys have to be on call all year.

Yep this is the best option. Ranger will put the deer down clean.

Being a wild animal is nasty, brutal and short. The Kiwis telling you to call your State rangers (They have various names, like Game Wardens, Conservation Police, etc) or even your counties animal control to report it so it can be put down clean are correct. If the buck isn't found by a predator, it will probably start starving because it can't browse properly.

Bear traps. Best outcome, deer will lose another leg and learn to walk upright on two legs. It will assimilate into human society and you'll have a new neighbor.

The deer seems to have moved on, so it must be an old injury and has adapted to its life as a gimp. I hope the other deer make fun of it.
