Lamprey’s Disease Awareness Month: Global Health Agencies Urge Vigilance

As cases of Ocular Parasitic Infiltration Syndrome (OPIS), commonly known as Lamprey’s Disease, continue to be reported in isolated clusters worldwide, the International Health Watch (IHW) is launching Lamprey’s Disease Awareness Month to increase public awareness, promote early detection, and dispel misinformation surrounding this rare but serious condition.

Lamprey’s Disease, first identified in coastal regions of Eastern Europe in 2021, is believed to result from exposure to waterborne proto-parasitic vectors that may enter the ocular cavity through microscopic abrasions or compromised tear ducts. Once established, the parasite forms a ring-shaped feeding structure within the eye, leading to symptoms including progressive night blindness, circular retinal lesions, and in severe cases, photophobic spasms and tissue migration.

Dr. Helena Rukmani, Director of Emerging Pathogens at IHW, warns:

“Public awareness is essential. Though rare, Lamprey’s Disease is highly invasive once symptoms manifest. Early intervention can prevent irreversible ocular damage.”

The IHW urges individuals—especially those in affected regions or recently exposed to untreated freshwater sources—to undergo routine ocular screenings and report any symptoms such as peripheral halo vision, persistent ocular pressure, or unexplained concentric scarring.

Preventative guidelines and educational materials are available at ihw.global/lampreyawareness.
