LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — WARNING: The attached video contains violence and strong language. Viewer discretion is advised.

A Las Vegas judge was attacked during a sentencing hearing on Wednesday -- and the incident was captured on video.

Deobra Redden swore at Judge Mary Kay Holthus as she handed down the sentence, then jumped over the bench and lunged at her.

Redden was scheduled to be sentenced for a charge of attempted battery with substantial bodily harm. Before the attack, a prosecutor said Redden had a history of violent crimes and asked for a prison term. Past charges include home invasion, domestic violence and battery on a protected person.

Speaking on his own behalf, Redden said he was "in a better place in my mind," had a better support system and had a new job.

"I feel like I shouldn't be sent to prison, but if it's appropriate for you, then you gotta do what you gotta do," he said.

Redden's attorney also argued for a suspended sentence, citing previous completions of probation programs, his mental health history and his background.

"I appreciate that, but I think it's time that he get a taste of something else," Holthus responded. "Because I just can't with that history."

That's when Redden swore at Holthus, jumped over the bench and leapt onto the judge, leading to a melee as he attacked her. A man next to Holthus and a court marshal both tried to hold Redden back and subdue him.

"Hey, get off her. Get off her. Don't do this!" someone yells.

Several people eventually started to hit Redden to get him to stop, though much of the response took place off-camera. Holthus can be heard yelling out during the attack, as well.

"Is she okay?" another person asks.

Someone activated an alarm and Redden could be heard yelling as people checked on Holthus. One of the court marshals can be seen holding a cloth or tissue to his head, as well.

Holthus was eventually able to stand after a few minutes, and officers escorted her out of the courtroom before ordering all other defendants out.

News 3 was told a marshal was taken to a hospital for examination, as well as Holthus. Both are expected to be okay. \

Police later said a criminal investigation is currently being conducted.

Really funny that Darrell Brooks wasn't paraded around like this when he wouldn't shut up during sentencing. But I'm sure the media will crop the black guard out and claim this was uncalled for.
Being loud in court isn't a crime unless you start going on a total chimpout and yelling at everyone to the point the bailiff has to put you in time out, which IIRC DARRELL E. BROOKS never actually did. He got very close, but always knocked it off in the end. On the other hand, that's the bare minimum level of restraint I'd expect for a man who has demonstrated that he can and will try to pull a Fatality on the judge if he so desires.

(Assuming it's actually true and without other legitimate reason) People wonder why in some cases blacks might come out with a little harsher sentencing in some cases. Anyone who actually pays attention knows the attitude issues and open lack of respect/remorse seen in quite a few black defendants... not to mention shit like this. (more than enough to potentially skew results) The studies that even attempt to truly match up cases, case histories and details of the cases, never even touch this issue at all. Let alone quantify and compare it, or match up similar situations from defendants of other races.

Isn't this like saying a rabid pitbull biting a cop is FREAKING BASED? No, it's an animal that should have been put down for the safety of the community harming innocents.

Felon who lunged at judge ‘superman’ style charged with attempted murder in shocking attack (Archive)

The convicted felon who lunged over the bench “superman” style at a Las Vegas judge last week appeared in court again Tuesday to face an attempted murder charge over the shocking attack.

Deobra Redden was surrounded by guards with a mask covering his mouth and orange mitts over his hands as he appeared in front of a different judge to face charges over last Wednesday’s courtroom chaos.

Redden, 30, was charged with attempted murder against an older person, battery, intimidating a public officer with threat of force, extortion, and disregarding the safety of a person resulting in substantial bodily harm, KVVU reported.

During a hearing last week, Redden launched himself at Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus after she denied his request for probation for an April baseball bat attack.

Redden is accused of pulling Holthus’ hair as he wrapped his hands around her throat and hit her on the head, according to a criminal complaint obtained by CNN.

“Once he knew she was about to sentence him to prison, (Redden) did leap over defense counsel table into the well of the courtroom, thereafter rushing towards the judicial bench and jumping over it ‘superman’ style directly into Judge Mary Kay Holthus’s judicial space, landing directly on top of her and immediately attacking the judge,” the complaint outlines.

He also allegedly battled a Las Vegas cop, a clerk and a marshal while also spitting on an officer, the complaint states.

Before Tuesday’s hearing, Redden landed in Holthus’ courtroom Monday, where he was also forced to sport orange mitts and full-face spit hood while wearing shackles following his viral outburst.

He was sentenced to 19-48 months in prison for the past baseball bat assault

Following the sentencing Monday, Redden’s family told reporters that their loved one had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Court records indicate he was competent to stand trial.

Foster mother Karen Springer said Redden “just snapped” when he launched at the judge.

“No disrespect. We’re not denying what he did,” Springer said.

“It’s a chemical imbalance,” his sister LaDonna Daniels said. “I don’t think sending him to prison will help.”
