This is slightly OT but it's about the only thread I can think of that might get me an answer that is somewhat legitimate -

What is it with the Black Community in some parts of America and for lack of a better term "bizarre names" I mean I can understand names that come from your family history etc but in America that seems to not be the case - I mean Lashaunae and names in that vein appear to only show up in America and even then they don't make any sense. Did it start back in the 60's / 70's with the black power movement or something as a way of trying to separate them selfs from the rest of America or is there a far stupider reason?

Black names are literally just an invention by mid-century Islamic Black Nationalists who wanted to distance themselves from White Society. These names are mostly just bastardizations of French and Arabic names.

French because of Louisiana (Highest Percentage of Blacks), Arabic because the WE WUZ movement started from Black Americans claiming their true heritage lies in Islam despite being West African (and you know, Muslims starting up the Slave Trade).

For the longest time Blacks historically had good upstanding Christian and traditional names, way better than Whites actually in that regard.

There are entire books written on this subject, but essentially American blacks lost their connection to the ancestors due to slavery so, over time, they (Sometimes consciously, sometimes not) created names differentiate themselves from White America and to proclaim their blackness. As @ICametoLurk said, the current names are just sort of a absurd bastardizations, but there was a time where they were less absurd, but still unique in America.
 
She's only 21? If she had the mental fortitude she could turn things around but realistically she'll probably retain this fat acceptance mindset into the age where it's harder to shed the pounds.

It's hilarious to me because I'll never stop reminding people that the most typical 'black name', Tyrone, was literally ripped from the name of some county in Ireland.
