Robert Fisk was one of the few reasons to read The Independent. He was actually a really good interviewer, and reading his interview of bin Laden after 9/11 is almost haunting because bin Laden is not at all cagy about where he's coming from and what he wants to do.

He is also notorious for getting beaten up by a bunch of Afghans who hated Americans and then defending them because apparently he deserved it or something. Whatever else you can say about him, he wasn't some pussy who instantly changes his opinion just by getting the shit beat out of him.
