At least Obi-Wan in Episode IV could still throw hands. The wise old man NPC is some guy in a white outfit whose special ability is “knows people.” His puts in a good word for you with the first Gym leader or something. That’s his ultimate attack.
I always loved how Arx Fatalis played with the trope by making you secretly an other worldly God being who was memory wiped and has the ability to learn and grow at an exponential rate.
