learning a foreign language via video games?

Earlier today I remembered this:

I honestly am surprised this was still being maintained up until 2018 and still runs on Windows 10. The site hosts a game called Slime Forest Adventure which... basically its flashcards but with an NES-style JRPG wrapped around it.

Back in the day this taught me how to read the kana alphabets and that lesson stuck to the present day, so now I registered the full version to see how well that does for building kanji and vocabulary. To be honest I wish I had done this sooner.

I learned English by playing SNES-era games.
Good memories playing Final Fantasy VI (III) on my old SNES with a dictionary on hand.
Is doable.
However, for Japanese, there is a little bit more effort involved. Right now, I'm in the process of doing it. But I think it has been two years since I started, and right now I feel confident enough to play simple games like Yokai Watch.
Had to learn tons of kanji and words before getting up to this point.
