I've been holding back on buying any Lego sets just because of how unnecessarily fucking expensive they are. I broke down today because I found 60379 Deep-Sea Explorer for a great deal. I've been eyeing this one since it came out because the submarine looks similar to the one in Subnautica. I just finished building the submarine and the little mech suit as well. Pretty cool set so far. I like this little exploration theme they're doing. I hope they keep doing it.

On another note: Holy shit the Lego community has gone off their chain since I stopped paying attention. Especially Jang. He comes across like an actual fucking lunatic nowadays, especially with his Lego city project. I always looked up to him because I wanted to build one just like his. It's crazy to see him act like this now. I have a sneaking suspicion that he's on some sort of drug mixture. Just2Good goes from one drug addiction to another by trooning out. MandRproductions is still consooming garbage-tier Star Wars shit. I feel like all of these guys need their own threads just documenting their declines.

At least Brickitect is still fine. Based Lego dad W

I'm not a security expert but people have alleged it might have been some sort of phishing scheme, as well as some wondering what access the superhaxxors got to BL if much at all, given that if they had totally hacked the site wouldn't that mean BL admins wouldn't be able to completely shut it down? I don't think it's a nothingburger, but given how ESL the hackers message was I don't believe we're dealing with the best and the brightest.

2024 leaks have begun!

I like this set; I think its side build with a closure rail and cool screen is excellent, and I also like the use of the Nexo shield on Shadow's bike.
It's pretty solid, I'd argue the entire Sonic theme has been pretty good. Like the head mold for shadow, straight out of the games

One of the biggest things I miss from back in the day were the little super articulated Technic lego minifigs, even though their parts were glued together so you couldn't swap them out as much as normal minifigs I really liked how much character they had despite mostly being generic drivers and occasionally an evil bald dude with robot arms.

Apparently the Tahu and Takua special edition Bionicle set can now be purchased individually on Amazon. Before the only way to acquire it was by purchasing over $100 worth of product from Lego directly.

I ended up doing that $100 promo because I missed and couldn't afford the blacktron or forest men one, fuck this recent trend of making standard sets that would sell well into the "gift with purchase" instead of just a little novel promotional set. If I had the money lego seems to want it's customers to have to spend I'd 1: use it mostly on other shit than lego and 2: get that Adventurers Baron von Baron manor set where he's set up some kinda drop tower ride inside and it's a generic theme park "haunted house" set despite all the labelling saying "manor von baron" and the corpse of the OG sam sinister he stole the name of in the attic as a cheeky reference. I still have my figures of the guy from back then so I wouldn't need to wait for a reboot/reference homage to display him with his cool home. Anyways, the set I got was a big monkey mech since everything else was sold out or didn't register for the promo.

On the topic of Bionicle, it's always been weird to me how people call them "Bionicles" now online and look at me weird when I just call them "Bionicle sets/characters". There's also the fact there's so many unrelated horny technic builds calling themselves "Bionicle" to the point that's like been a stereotype for Bionicle for a few years. They will never be a real Bionicle to me, they have NO KANOHI. They have NO ELEMENTAL POWERS they have NO TOA TOOLS. They aren't even on the playing field of basic bitch rahi! They aren't Bionicle, they're OCs wearing the skinsuit of a popular technic theme for internet recognition points.

I'm thinking of getting into trying out resin casting solely for the sake of recasting Bionicle parts at some point since Lego did the braindead move of destroying all the molds and post-corona "value speculators" have been increasingly distorting the prices of used Lego with Bionicle mask parts getting the worst of it. Every time I try to look up bionicle shit search engines almost always try directing me to some fucking reddit where people are constantly asking how much shit is potentially worth and the pinned thread is a moderator created one about "transphobia" instead of the actual damn lego theme with cope in the comments claiming it's "totally related because Takanuva is a trans allegory you guys!!" as if the theme with Takanuva wasn't him accepting responsibility as the chosen one from the prophecy and all that matters is the fact he"didn't fit in" and changed forms and got a new title. blech! The less money I give to these pop culture grave robbers the better.

Post came out a bit rambly but I got a lot of pent up lego thoughts the last few years.

The new City alien minifigures have been leaked:

I guess it's not surprising that they went with a more cutesy style for non-violence and to avoid encroaching on Star Wars' territory. It's interesting that the aliens have their own space suits, which do look very cool. I wonder if this will be more like Life on Mars, with more realistic human vehicles and an emphasis on alien contact and communication.

"non violence"
the second I find these things if they're in a cheapo set I'm going to get it and give them a gun. All lego ayys should be armed in some capacity.

I 'member Life on Mars. The pneumatic tube base was amazing.

If Lego ever brings that gimmick back after 20 years I'll be impressed.

They brought it back for MARS mission back in the day but that was only a few years after life on mars. Weirdest thing I found out about mars mission was that the evil aliens in that weren't the evil martians that were alluded to but never shown in the lore of the life on mars sets, nor was the theme even connected despite having extremely similar design philosophy to the human vehicles.

Is there some comic or other media that tells the lore of Life on Mars? I've always been curious about it. I know the contemporary Alpha Team had comics in the back of the instructions.

I have very fond memories of the Life on Mars theme. The Planet Protector has to be my favorite set of the theme. There's just something mysterious and spooky about the asymmetric eyes and dual fans on the martian mech. I really like the martian minifig design too. It was simple but effective and original of Lego. The mech design is abstract enough too using basic bricks to make a cool figure. I think Exo Force is an evolution of this kind of design but Exo Force is too noisy.

As for lore and story, I don't think there's anything official. The most concrete semblance of a story can probably be gathered from the Lego Racers 2 intro scene to Life on Mars. Basically an earth crew aboard a space shuttle hits an asteroid and crash lands on Mars. The rest is for your imagination as you play with the sets. I really like the intro scene too. The pneumatic wisching and whir of the electric motors of the mech as it scans your crashed shuttle is creepy even today.

There were flash games and some comics from what I remember, similar case to a lot of lego stuff from around the time. Rock raiders, Life on Mars, and Alpha team all had shit like that though with Alpha Team and Rock raiders it was tied mostly to a PC game.

The premise/plot was literally "Humans crash land on mars, discover hurting ayy civilization, they work together to try and solve shit". Aside from each minifig having an established name, specialty, and personality stuff was pretty open. The martian minifigs were some iconic stuff visually I don't think we'll ever see anything like again.

What's interesting to me is despite mars mission having no continuity with life on mars, the designers of the sets clearly had something like that in mind with how the human faction uses a combo of the life on mars martian and human set gimmicks. The tubes in the life on mars sets were used for transporting minifigs, but the mars mission sets had it set up for solely for transporting captured enemy faction aliens or energy crystals which were coincidentally the same color as the rock raiders ones.

The idea of a shared Lego universe is pretty interesting. I believe that in the Lego Club magazine, Monster Fighters and Galaxy Squad were confirmed to take place in the same universe. Also, the same character appears in both Galaxy Squad and Ultra Agents, so you can add Ultra Agents to the list. Dino 2012, Pharoh's Quest, Atlantis, and Alien Conquest all take place in the same universe as well, and in Dino 2012, there's a character named Josh Thunder, who is related to Johnny Thunder of the Adventurers. Additionally, there's a fan-made book called Lego Space: Building the Future that links together Classic Space, Futron, Space Police I, Blacktron I, and Ice Planet.

Futuron, Space police, blacktron, and ice planet are technically all part of "classic space" lore-wise. They're meant to be different exploration teams or factions. There's a lot of overlap in the old lego space commercials that showcase this.

Speaking of fan related stuff, I just got reminded I saw a youtube video a few months back where a guy tried piecing together the blacktron lore into a somewhat coherent narrative history.

Really weird to me how Blacktron's been advertised as space pirates, galactic defenders, and a shady corporation all around the same time period, though the space pirate thing is what people associate them with mainly.

However, in terms of carry over lore shit between themes, Ogel from Alpha team being a descendant of Vladek from Knights kingdom is something that always stuck with me, especially when the evil wizard from the skeleton faction castle sets that came out a few years after that had a modernized eyeshine variant of Ogel's face that never got addressed in the lore, I always took him as another relative due to the whole "skeleton servants and black and red mountain tower fortress" thing he had going on.

Man, all those themes are great but Ice Planet 2002 is really special. I recently got the Deep Freeze Defender, and it's quickly become one of my favorite vintage sets I own. The color combo of white, blue, and trans neon orange is just perfect, and it's in my opinion the best looking spaceship of the 90s, if not ever.

The rover's design is quite sleek and seems to get into some sci-fi design ideas, which I really appreciate. I like that it has what appears to be an antenna. Also, apparently the aliens are just going to be cute little blobs rather than actual minifigures -- perhaps they are a precursor to the aliens of Mars Mission?
