This is what Girls was, though. Lena Dunham's fat body was frequently made fun of in the show, as well as her narcissism, her clothes being mismatched and stupid, her not knowing how to put on makeup, all of it was done for comedy. I've watched interviews where she explained "It's funny for someone who looks like me to be naked," and cited Chris Farley whipping out his gut as a point of inspiration for that. I think the show was genuinely funny in an awkward way, and I can think of several other shows where the entire point is just "hey, look at these self-involved assholes" but the casts are majority male so people don't viscerally hate it. People either hate Girls because it's about selfish, narcissistic women, or because they personally hate Lena Dunham and can't look past that. I've always found the criticism of the show to be weirdly personal against Lena herself when she wasn't the only writer or director involved in the show's run.
