I would have watched a show with that premise, though: a plain girl marries a hot, rich doctor and all the fun that happens when people think she's not "good enough"for him. From a comedic pov, of course.

This is what Girls was, though. Lena Dunham's fat body was frequently made fun of in the show, as well as her narcissism, her clothes being mismatched and stupid, her not knowing how to put on makeup, all of it was done for comedy. I've watched interviews where she explained "It's funny for someone who looks like me to be naked," and cited Chris Farley whipping out his gut as a point of inspiration for that. I think the show was genuinely funny in an awkward way, and I can think of several other shows where the entire point is just "hey, look at these self-involved assholes" but the casts are majority male so people don't viscerally hate it. People either hate Girls because it's about selfish, narcissistic women, or because they personally hate Lena Dunham and can't look past that. I've always found the criticism of the show to be weirdly personal against Lena herself when she wasn't the only writer or director involved in the show's run.

Lena is/was a hatable target. For a brief while, she was hipster royalty, the flabby embodiment of self absorbed and irony poisoned millennials that were clogging up every hipster dive in the trendy part of town. I would agree that it was made personal but I wouldn’t call it weird.

I think this is one case where her sicko “artist” parents and their lack of boundaries come into play. She seems willing to forgive and overlook anything if it’s part of a man’s “artistic process”.

I’m sure all they have to say is “It’s strictly an artistic relationship, we NEED each other to produce this level of music and visuals”. And if she asks questions or objects to anything, it’s “hindering their artistic progress”

I agree. Lena’s salad days (as if she’d ever eat a salad lol) are long past and she barely gets any work these days. Then her frumpiness is now going to be more challenging to reverse as her metabolism slows. She doesn’t bring a whole lot to the table, which is why she married a literally who and has likely opened the relationship to keep this sham of a marriage going.

Another similar example is Lindy West: she had to agree to open the marriage up so his husband can bang someone younger and hotter. 95% of the time an open relationship benefits the woman but there are those rarities where the man gets to benefit. Women like Lindy and Lena get to stay out of the dating game and their husbands don’t dump them so they can keep hooking up.
