This is what the apartment used to be, I think.
So I'm watching this with the knowledge that Dunham was responsible for picking out everything in the apartment, and even though we don't get to see much of the apartment, it's cracking my shit up. That HIDEOUS shelving unit in the room he used as a studio? Now that I've seen the kind of shit she put in her own apartment I know for certain that she is totally to blame for that, plus the animal wallpaper that looks like it belongs in a kid's room, plus the ugly, fleshy-peach color on some of the walls (seriously, the space looks so choppy and incoherent, I can't tell wtf is even going on). As for the kitchen, "I like the orange [cabinets]," and an old, non-working plastic clock with a pic of himself at age 15 on the face, because "Nothing bad had happened yet in my life." No mention of anything else he might have liked--not the pastel-tinted cookware on display, or inadequate open shelves that mean the countertop is perennially cluttered, or (in 2015!) the by-then basic-bitch white subway tile on the walls and ghastly accent wall covered in reclaimed wood and adorned with giant tin sign letters that read "J

L." Seriously, I expected to see a "Keep Calm and Carry On" or "Live, Love, Laugh" poster, because when Dunham's taste isn't falling flat on its face like an awkward fatgirl, it's slipping into a coma out of sheer boredom.
The bulk of the interview takes place in a neighborhood diner (where he appears much more relaxed than he does in the apartment), or in a recording studio in NYC. When he does mention Dunham, he hesitates for a moment before he says her name, as if he's reluctant to. When she calls him on the phone to see what he's doing, and he's telling her he's on the way to the studio, he's really awkward and tense, and signs off with an "I love you" that sounds forced. He's much less awkward when he talks about how she's usually the first one to listen to new stuff as they're lying in bed together, which is pretty personal, but when talking directly to her, even about mundane shit? He sounds strained. Interesting.
