i have to give him credit though, even though he is painfully obvious in his persona sockpuppetry, his personas are still at least more convincing than your average tumblr user's personas (although admittedly that's not a high bar to top)

Len does seem genuinely confused at what's going to happen at his hearing (not trial) on August 10th. It's just a preliminary hearing. He'll enter a plea, his lawyer (if he actually pulls his head out of his ass and gets one) will enter an appearance, and that'll be about it. His trial, if he's foolish enough to force things to that point, will be later.

EDIT: @Saul Goodman is correct. He won't be entering a plea here. That comes later.

Actually it is just a hearing. It determines whether or not there is a prima facie (i.e. "on its face" or "at face value") case that (1) the crime charged was committed and (2) Lennay committed it.

If the judge finds a prima facie case to exist (spoiler: they pretty much always do -- it's a very low standard because for the purposes of the hearing all the prosecution's evidence/testimony is considered to be true), then it goes to the actual county court for a formal arraignment, plea, and potentially trial. So yeah, preliminary hearings aren't really part of the case, they're more just a check against rogue prosecutors wasting court time.

Edit: That said, since over 90% of criminal cases plea bargain, it's also usually the only time to hear testimony and -- since magistrate courts are usually small -- see the defendant up close and personal.
