Funnily enough, there's quite a lot of medieval artwork that depicts Mohammad. I believe the Wahabbi creed is the one that gets really pissed if you draw him. It's something to do with idolatry. Saudi Arabia actually bulldozed some significant places in his life, like actual UNESCO Heritage sites.

*edit* Shia Muslims are actually a-okay with pictures of Mohammad if I'm reading this correctly

Yes, that is sort of correct. Not just Wahhabi but Sunni Islam in general. Shia Islam takes a different view and I think there have even been Iranian films that depicted Mohammed.

Unsurprisingly, the Koran says nothing about not depicting the prophet.
