The interaction between stats and XCom's RNG is black magic anyway, so you can just claim spiritual inspiration.
They're just renamed starting soldiers like the original, so the stats will always be randomized and there's no guarentee your next character will be particularly good at anything.
I just compared my stats. I'm a little more anemic but my gun accuracy went up, and I maintained my throwing accuracy.
If I had my druthers, I'd work up a mod that adds dead troop stats and averages them out when spawning new soldiers, as should happen with DNA recombination vats; that way something like losing Root's arm wouldn't hurt the team as much.
