Let's Sperg Let's Play XCOM UFO Defense (Completed) - Heavy casualties expected.

Requesting to be put back in the ayys hunt once more !

Still not familiar with oldXCOM, is it a bad idea to premptively throw a nade in every unexplored bend or corner before moving in ?
I guess if you have the grenades and the troops able to carry that many of them its a viable tactic. Though once you move up to the alien grenade its liable to kill your own soldiers in the backblast, and the regular grenade just won't cut it once Mutons and Ethereals make it on to the battlefield.

Explosions will also damage sensitive alien equipment and vaporize any Elerium caught in the blast too. You don't need to capture alien equipment past a few examples, but capturing it intact drastically increases your score at the end of the mission and can be sold for a fair amount of cash if you need it.

Yeah but, whats a few dead x-com/civs and ruined alien equipment, when we kill that XENO SCUM.

I've gotten a few messages asking to put people back in the fight so I want to clarify that I'm going precisely in the order that people died, since I figure that's the fairest possible way. Also, 14 of you are already ressurected, check the Fresh Meat post. I can post screenshots of the Memorial screen if people want though.

Why have I not gotten my call-up? My environs are disappointingly sparse of aliens.

Missions will average about 12-20 enemies into the endgame so I'm not gonna zero in on every kill people make. That said, I also can't really figure out where I want to do soldier checkups and maybe show off diaries, so your best bet right now is to check who got promoted at the end of each mission to get an idea of your soldier's progress. Its usually the third picture in the mission score cards I post at the end of each one, right before the casualty list if there is one.

A little early, but I hope you do TFTD next and maybe do a savegame edit to feature all the previous survivors.

I hope you do TFTD next
There are numerous other things I would rather do first than TFTD. Including smashing my hand with a hammer.

I only beat Terror From the Deep once and I did that by essentially speedrunning the game and fudging all of the annoying two-parter missions. The worst part about that game isn't even the difficulty or the monsters it throws at you, its how fucking long the missions go on and on for.

Great example: Alien Colony missions are just flat out designed to frustrate you by placing access lifts and holes in the ceiling all over the place. Not only does this defy all rational design laws, it also means that short of just keeping soldiers in every single room, you can't effectively sweep the base. Most of those missions involve just sitting around and waiting for the enemy to step out of cover. At which point there's an easy 50/50 chance you'll lose at least one soldier, when you probably already lost a bunch of people in the previous half of the mission. Rinse and repeat. I'd much rather do XPiratez or attempt The XCOM Files mostly blind.

XPiratez is guilty of the same map design in some circumstances

But usually it will give you a clear indicator of when that kind of mission is coming. I dunno about XCOM Files though, that mod does seem to be a bit less sadistic most of the time.

I've also toyed with the idea of maybe doing the original Laser Squad but I'm not sure yet how well that emulates. I'm not even sure you can rename soldiers actually.
