Let's Sperg Let's Play XCOM UFO Defense (Completed) - Heavy casualties expected.

If it's not too late, sign me up too and remember that I'm always one day away from retirement.
I feel like this game is rapidly going to need more people to sign up. Else we start rotating people back in. So with that said...

My life for Aiur.

*edit
Hey @Null this forum game is shaping up to be fun and entertaining. But we go through users so quickly that we need more bodies for the front line! Since you are advertising random threads lately, wanna help the cause and save Earth?

As you can clearly see we’re already down 10 troops, if you count the wounded as out of action. Recruits from the third wave I put together last night are already going to see action. Friend Computer has earned that month long hospital stay while the doctors sew a new face on for him. wtfNeedtoSignUp is clearly giving blowjobs to the right official because he’s promoted past Squaddie to Sergeant despite having no kills and only seeing one mission of action.
Not doing shit and still getting promoted, happy to see the game character is true to my IRL military service.

Floaters always amuse the heck out of me, early on fighting against them means you've got two teams of incompetent boobs taking potshots at one another. Except one side has actually deadly weapons and an autismo cape.

By all means sign me back on or my clones identical children. Maybe this time I won't get instantly shot in the guts by an Ayyyy while opening the door. More likely I'll get shot in the back by Overcast or vaporized by a stray rocket. Different tombstone though.

Oh, if we are having some influence over our soldiers, I fucking hate Grey type aliens, I hope my soldier takes every opportunity to kill them even if it leads to his demise, and I will count every Sectoid he kills as a spiritual victory.

I'm honestly really tempted to try UFO Defense for myself. I remember enjoying the remake from years back. Although RNGesus and me have a complicated relationship.

Its funny to think only one month ago the idea of aliens invading the Earth was frightening. XCOM is becoming a much more confident organization, enjoying its total lack of international criticism. The alien threat so far has been less than impressive. A few tiny ships, some fragile aliens that lack any kind of armor, some dopey looking big animals that die just fine to conventional explosives. Why were we ever worried about anything in the first place?

screen007.png
screen011.png
screen010.png

The aliens show they are capable of basic tactics by preparing an ambush for our team. Niggermancer draws reaction fire when he takes the first shot. He's hit by plasma and loses half of his health, but is not, infact, mortally wounded. He'll still need a stint in the hospital after this mission, but at least he's in no danger of bleeding out.

screen012.png
screen013.png
screen015.png

One rocket takes out two of the troublesome aliens and exposes another. Judge Dredd makes short work of it. Duncan Hills Coffee and Overcast exit the Skyranger to sweep the map.

screen017.png
screen018.png

Duncan Hills Coffee is a crackshot.

screen019.png
screen047.png

Niggermancer earns some time off. We sink our extra funds into expanding the living quarters and storage space. Its expensive, but the directors expect another easy paycheck next month. Why worry?

screen021.png

The mood of a fresh wave of new recruits was that of lambs to the slaughter at the start of things. Now, it is all but certain that these recruits will go into battle with medical kits and laser weaponry. The combined efforts of the world developed a new weapon in less time than it takes for the World Health Organization to cook up a flu vaccine.

Speaking of the World Health Organization, our researchers are quite pleased with themselves when they advance medical science by what feels like half a century in barely a month. Unlike a conventional first aid kit or medical bag, XCOM Medikits are fully mechanized comprehensive treatment kits that can stabilize fatal wounds in seconds. Even the least skilled of XCOM personnel need minimal training to operate this device. Attention is turned to the alien explosives recovered from the battlefield.

screen046.png

Our neglected engineering staff is finally put to work. They tell us it will take them over a month to prepare twenty of the cutting edge Medikits. The directors deem this unacceptable and hire more staff immediately.

screen049.png

Another week, another UFO. XCOM feels they have this down now.

screen053.png
screen057.png

Duncan Hills Coffee is certainly an up and coming recruit. He pulls off the remarkable feat of sniping an alien straight through a window.

screen061.png
screen060.png

Radical Cadre, an untested recruit, takes a mortal blow when an alien in another building fires out the window at him. During his reaction turn, he takes swift revenge on his assailant.

screen062.png
screen063.png

Miracle device the Medikit may be, the criminally tiny engineering staff meant that none were ready for deployment in time for his mission. @Radical Cadre bravely soldiers on and approaches the UFO with his comrades, but bleeds to death only one turn later.

screen066.png
screen068.png
screen070.png

Lemmingwise storms the UFO. He is none too pleased to have Overcast as his backup. But Overcast is a Squaddie with something to prove. He bravely leads the charge into the depths of the UFO while Lemmingwise holds his position to prevent the aliens from escaping. He claims his second kill. He confronts the third alien of his career and fails to kill it. Veteran Lemmingwise moves in to prevent the situation from spiraling out of control. Overcast is safe.

screen072.png

Overcast earns his promotion fair and square. Infact he is the youngest and least experienced to make this rank besides desk jockey wtfNeedtoSignUp. Everyone is too busy grumbling over Friend Computer and Niggermancer getting promotions in a hospital bed to congratulate the man who shot a comrade in the back. Overcast remains a man with something to prove.

screen075.png
screen076.png

Earth's first real laser weapon prototype is completed. Its bright hot rod cherry red paint job delights the directors to no end when they take it out to the range. They sip $200 bourbon and billow cigar smoke as they pass their new toy around, lighting targets on fire, punching pinholes in one inch steel plates and even blowing up a pig carcass. Little mind is paid to the fact that the engineers have their hands full with the Medikits at the moment, so this weapon is still some time away from general deployment.

(The visual appearance of the Laser Rifle is based on the MarSec Laser Rifle in the 1988 videogame Laser Squad, a tactical turn based game also by developer Julian Gollop that is acknowledged as the basis for what would be Defense. Before anyone asks, yes, that weapon, or rather the Heavy Laser variant of it, did have ammunition in the form of L40 and L50 "Las Pack" batteries.)

screen077.png

Our scientists are eager to understand the secrets of the alien power source, Element 115. How the aliens have managed to stabilize this violatile element at all is a mystery.

(Elerium 115 is a direct reference to the mythical "Element 115" that famed conspiracy theorist Bob Lazar claimed was a key element in producing antigravity fields and/or generating power for alien technology. It should be noted that in 2003 science managed to synthesize some of the real element 115, which has been dubbed Moscovium. Its extremely energetic and falls apart quickly, its mostly a foot note in materials science at the moment.)

screen079.png
screen080.png

Our budget is limited at the moment so despite the extra workshop space being available only 15 extra engineers were hired. They are still enough to reduce the manufacturing time of the Medikits to a third of its original window.

screen083.png
screen086.png
screen089.png

Its difficult to tell through the night vision scope but this battle takes place in a new environment, a coniferous forest deep in Siberia. The aliens have the high ground, but the hilly terrain works to our advantage.

screen090.png
screen091.png

Overcast is a Sergeant with something to prove. He draws first blood and nearly gets a second kill in the same turn.

screen095.png
screen096.png
screen097.png

To say he's not happy when Niggermancer expertly takes the Sectoid out with a grenade would be an understatement. He swears into the mic, but nobody says anything. It was either steal the kill, or let Overcast get shot in the face.

screen101.png
screen103.png
screen104.png

Both men will never have the chance to argue about it back on base. Judge Dredd and Niggermancer get surprised by an alien on the high ground and @Niggermancer is killed. Dredd returns fire and gets another kill. He is quickly becoming one of XCOM's most reliable team members.

screen106.png
screen107.png
screen109.png

Duncan Hills Coffee takes out an alien Overcast spotted with another grenade throw. The hills obscure the grenade thrower from the alien, meaning that reaction fire isn't triggered even though the grenade lands dead on. Overcast is less than thrilled about missing out on another kill that he was the first to spot.

screen110.png
screen111.png

Bloodthirsty Overcast gets his fourth kill. He's the first one to reach the UFO. Judge Dredd is ordered to back him up. Dear Leader tells him to stay put and wait while Dredd checks around the side of the UFO.

screen112.png

Impatient, Overcast takes the initiaitve. He shoots the alien point blank, full-auto. Two stray shots whizz past the engine core and its highly explosive Elerium fuel. One shot finds its target though.

screen114.png
screen115.png

screen116.png

@Overcast does not detonate the engine of the ship. But the alien returns fire and fries him all the same.

(Sending in Overcast alone was somewhat reckless, but in my defense that Sectoid would have waxed him regardless of whether or not he went in there alone or if he had the entire squad at his back, so no, I wasn't trying to get him killed on purpose.)

screen118.png
screen117.png
screen120.png

Judge Dredd, knowing the alien is wounded, attempts to apprehend it. This doesn't take though and the alien slips back inside its spacecraft. Dredd finds himself avenging a fallen comrade for a third time.

Melee combat barely exists in the classic XCOM. In the first game its the near exclusive province of the alien monsters and only a few of them. In Terror From the Deep you get mining tools that are heavy and expensive but deal biblical amounts of damage. OXCE vastly expands upon the whole thing by adding a melee attack to most large weapons, ie, hitting them with the butt of your rifle.

In addition to this, if you are standing next to a target their accuracy and yours drops to almost zero. This is symbolic of the characters being engaged in a physical struggle and preventing each other from firing their weapons at contact range. This makes the "lethal injection" (standing directly next to a unit and going full auto on them) a thing of the past and also opens up some strategies to prevent enemies from firing on your troops just by having some lunatic walk straight up to the alien and get up in their grill.

screen122.png
screen123.png

At least nobody will complain about Overcast having their back anymore.

screen124.png
screen125.png
screen126.png

Command rather tactlessly ignores the recent deaths of one rookie and two promising Sergeants by saying they've unlocked the strange metallic alloys the aliens use for everything and that personal protective gear is on the way. Given how the the Medikits still aren't finished and the Engineers have yet to start work on the laser arsenal, nobody on the squad is optimistic in the least about getting to see that armor any time soon.

Next time, will XCOM deploy its new laser technology in time for the next alien attack on humanity?

Since this is the first thread I've ever heard discussion of XCom modding, is there a Stargate mod? I've always thought it was the perfect formula for making a Stargate game.
The idea certainly has potential but i'm unaware of anything like that.

https://openxcom.org/forum/index.php/board,16.0.html Here's the list of major total conversion mods though, see what you can dig up.

If I do get picked again because of lack of names. Can you change the jester part to some other clown like profession? @L50LasPak That way it doesn't look like Old chuckles is being cloned.
I'll see what I come up with.

I'm glad this has gotten such a strong response, especially compared to the last attempt at it. Here's hoping we see a campaign to conclusion, for best or worst.
Absolute worst case scenario I'll probably just crunch down and speedrun the game, but so far I'm enjoying myself so I don't think it'll come to that.

Amazing. I can't wait to watch my cowardly ass get maimed due to inaccuracy! Love this thread.
