Despite being a heavy internet user, I hadn't heard of Something Awful until around 2009 when I started looking at LPs.

I did notice when some goofballs all with "SA" in their usernames were complaining that they somehow owned the concept* and that people needed to pay due respect or to do things "the right way". They exuded smug superiority and heaped condescension upon their enemies.

*A concept so unique that someone did it in 1990:

Some members of Super Best Friends Play post on Something Awful right? Not really any drama related to them, but goddamn is Liam terrible at Sonic Unleashed and videogames in general. Not just him, why are so many of these "professional" lets players so bad at video games?

At the risk of being :late: the guys talk about posting on GAF occasionally so I think that might be what you're thinking of, but it wouldn't surprise me if they posted on both.

On the second point, being a Let's Player is actually somewhat difficult. You have to juggle playing the game while also trying to be entertaining, and in the case of TBFP you have to also take part in some 3-4 conversations at a time because you and your friends are hyper autists. It's why walking sims and Telltale games are so popular, there's no real requirement as far as reactions are concerned. Off the top of my head, I can only name 3 Let's Players who can balance their commentary with the gameplay of actual games somewhat well. Sueprgreatfriend, niggurath, and research_indicates. But those guys are a dying breed who are acting more as director commentaries than riffers.

Doesn't matter if he actually put his views in the game, no one who disagrees with him should be in the industry, I guess.

This is off topic, but for anyone who is unfamiliar with the story, it was a pretty wild ride, and it was covered pretty even-handedly (or as sjws say, totally bigoted and hatefully) and to excess by an autist named seebs. Essentially two of the consultants for dnd 5e were not hugely popular with sjws in the community because of wrongthink, so when people discovered they had worked on the game they desperately tried to go back in time to make that not the case, and when that didn't work they did their very best to make them unpeople by accusing them of rape, misogyny, racism, sexism, transphobia etc.

The best part was that while one of the guys was your typical tardraging enemy of sjws, the other guy was Zak Sabbath, the host of dnd with pornstars, and a total hipster faggot artist with a dozen tranny friends who he constantly had on his show, which was totally and definitely not about tempting sad virgins with the enticing combination of a nerd hobby and hot women, but was actually about empowering women and showing that porn stars were normal people like you and me, except they may or may not have multiple dicks in their asshole at any given time. In other words, an sjw wet dream. He was capable of treating his co-worker like a normal human being however, so he was clearly a monster who needed to be destroyed.

There actually is a Kotaku article called "who invented lets play" which interviews Slowbeef, though I refuse to link to that shithole. However, here is a 2013 blog post From Slowbeef, which is a pretty nice summary and shows how he sees it. Ultimately, I think he doesn't really care, and sees it as something of a curse.

Outside of semantics/"history", Slowbeef doesn't belong in this thread, I can't really think of anything at all he's ever done thats lolcow-ish. It his associates that are drama pits.

I used to go to the SA forums and the only LPs I read were the humorous screenshot ones, like RedChocobo's Pokemon ones or The Dark Id's ones.

Call me crazy, but I don't find a bunch of faggots trodding all over each other to make lame jokes while one person is playing a game as being entertaining. If I wanted that, I'd just hang out with my friends. And at least when I'm doing that, we're all playing games together.

The only LPs I ever watched/read and enjoyed on SA were one guy playing 50 Mission Crush, and old Tandy/Coleco game that was a Rogue-like as you commanded a B-17 over Europe on missions and then a KOTOR 2 thread that was all screen shots that the OP closed after every post her made to keep people from fagging it up. The rest were just fat fucks int he late 20s making shitty meme jokes or annoying 15 year olds with cracking voices making the same terrible jokes.

That guy is a colossal douche. I remember his intolerable LP of Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures where his "friends" did nothing but groan and exercise every avenue they could to treat a mediocre indie game like it was this irredeemable abomination non-stop for two hours straight, and at the end he literally called it "the worst game of 2013". 2013, for those of you who don't know, is when Ride to Hell: Retribution was released.

It doesn't help that his posts reek of condescending, self-righteous vomit.

The commentary during a big scene in Brothers is seriously the Let’s Player narrating what is clearly happening onscreen, interspersed with half-hearted exclamations (cause you gotta say SOMETHING right?) and then a poor joke - one where the fruit is so low-hanging, it may as well be buried under the tree - followed by an explanation of the terrible joke.

The characters in Brothers speak in a language I called Sims-ese, but at that moment on YouTube I wished the brothers would look at the camera and say, “Dude, could you show some fucking respect?”
