Let's Players originating from Something Awful - ft. VoidBurger, General Ironicus, Bob Kamoc

For the Watch_Dogs LP, Ironicus did a couple of History of Chicago videos... that he only wrote and narrated and had Chip set to photos and editing and ish, and which he promised to release in tandem with LP parts only to drop it after releasing like two of them. So basically, he puts in the minimal effort to be a contributor.

I kinda enjoy his color commentary, though. Him and Chip seem to have a really good rapport.
Agreed.

To recap: Meowtroid here is abandoning a 40 hour playthrough because of the main character's name, ranting about having to take medication because of this and that the only trustworthy friends to have are slowbeef's Twitch chat.
So how does this sort of shallow virtue-signaling work? Is anyone named "Nick" suddenly supposed to apologize? It's kind of a common name.

Slowbeef sures up his allegiance to the leftist ratking with some retweets:

I'm interested to see what Slowbeef's endgame with this is.

He's been friends with Total Biscuit for years (he's been on the Co-Optional Podcast a few times, too) and I'm presuming that it's through TB that Slowbeef knows this mentally ill man that thinks he's a woman.

He's talked about creating games at his job as a mobile dev before and he's also talked about creating his own games and apps as a business venture with his wife (but hasn't talked about those things publicly for a while, now, and I'm not sure if he ever released anything).

So, my theory is that he's networking with these games/app journalists now so that he can use them to promote his stuff in the future.

Incidently, Slowbeef's now associated with a weirdly large amount of the ratking and lolcows in general; it's as if he's collecting them like an autistic Pokemon trainer or something.
He's technically even commented on Chris (he and Diabetus talked over an old Chris video on their Webcam Ward series forever ago).

He's already written one article for Polygon (or some other worthless outlet, whatever) when the Pewdiepie thing first hit, so he might be looking for more writing opportunities. Even if he doesn't have anything concrete in mind, it costs him nothing to stroke the egos of these freaks just in case he needs to cash in some good will later.

clarification for anyone not in the know, while slowbeef's always been very left-leaning and always seemed like he's kept a little bit of that college bleeding heart in him whenever issues came up on podcast or something (although i was only listening regularly up to episode 60-70 before i stopped entirely), he never really let it mess with his content/social media presence that much until a small regular number of Retsupurae fans got weeny, and then it got entirely insufferable around when Gamergate happened.

Retsupurae, starting out as "let's make fun of shitty LPers content/characters" rather quickly gathered a LOT of trollshielding, unlikable cunts for fans such as PressFartToContinue and a couple smaller personal lolcows; and while a few "your content is garbage lol" comments on a guys channel didn't hurt much if anything at first and was mostly drowned out by people spouting positive themed memes, it quickly grew to 20-40 rabid 13 year olds screaming "KILL YOURSELF THE INTERNET DOESN'T NEED CONTENT OUR LP GODS DISAGREE WITH" on the Retsupurae subject the second any video that didn't have the video creator's identity censored out was uploaded, and continued even when they started editing in messages pleading for people to not go leave shitty comments over the edited out names.

this + slowbeef migrating away from video production and moving more towards streaming culture alongside the gamergate happenings was the start of SB getting really chummy with other members of "the industry" (including meeting Zoe Quinn around that time) and other SJ-centric something awful LP members that are of the "correct" politics and attitude groups towards certain issues, potentially cause he feels guilty or partially responsible in some way for the online hostility and needs to surround himself with more "nice people just trying to be inclusive and caring" to avoid ejected from his new friends group as a hateful male cis het child-bearing shitlord, especially considering his highly problematic past where he'd readily call someone a faggot and tell them to kill themselves for a joke.

i don't know if he needs these mostly unsuccessful to low-level success industry people to get anywhere in the business considering he has a long history of mobile software dev work with real companies that possibly matter and has spoken of being part of large-scale product launches in companies before, so it's unlikely to me that he'd be rat king farming in some gambit for popularity, contacts, and financial success; the game devs he know mostly are unprofitable drama mongers, and the rest are all low-rank videogame reviewers and written content makers in an online social climate where that's less valued than it's been in a long time. hell, even with LP and RP fame alone he could get a kickstarter funded really easily if he managed to make a half decent product.

writing at polygon is probably just an extension of when he used to write frontpage articles for SA, dude probably likes to be heard and have his ego stroked by having his content be seen like most people; polygon is also like 10x more popular than SA is now and i imagine beef isn't going back to daddy lowtax after he hurt his LP friend's sadbones with his horrifyingly pedophile-negative parenting. all in all it looks to me that he's (in his nearing middle age now parental brain) migrating from the dying SA community climate of "the old days" to what he probably sees as where modern internet people just congregate now, it doesn't help that he had to mod a place that was basically converted to a social justice climate by what they see as the "young, hip, inclusive women of color" and "brave B R A V E troons" (1 or 2 LPers even went through temporary troon conversion only to backtrack) driving out the "older bigoted hateful people" and is trying to be remembered as one of "the good ones" by the new community.

or he could just be a bit of a faggy cuck and care about the way loud cunts with bad hair think of him before his own actual thoughts and opinions, i don't fuckin know i'm a guy with a wrestling chihuahua avatar on the internet not his dad (but i might just have written more about him than his dad has in awhile)

idk where he's gonna go when the inclusion circlejerk inevitably blows up socially having tied himself to so many burning bridges, but i'm sure he'll be fine career wise even if he stopped having an online presence entirely (and probably would improve his ability to parent not sitting at the computer screaming like DSP for hours every week)

He has like 2 or 3 articles for Polygon even.
Guy might not screech loud but deep down he's a raging SJW and always has been. I mean he's been friends with Zoe Quinn's private account for years now, this isn't some new development.

He's friends with SJW types and has become kinda a weird autist lately, but I haven't seen much that indicates he's geared that way much himself.

I'm pretty sure slowbeef just doesn't sleep much. He's mentioned somewhere before he likes to burn the candle and both ends or that's how I remember him putting it. This is somewhat concerning as slowbeef isn't exactly a slender guy and I'm pretty sure not sleeping is bad for you heart and health in general.

Diabetus said it about him on one of the Retsutalk episodes, IIRC.

Twitter update:

Slowbeef posts a pretty cruel tweet mocking Alex Jones for losing custody of his kids:

Slowbeef's been behaving really weird lately. Mid-life crisis, perhaps?

Mid-life crises must affect all these "career" LPers pretty heavily I should guess, because it's damned difficult to ignore two things: that the medium changes so fast they can't keep up, and even if they could, artistic expression has never been a career path that provides a reliable future. It's easier to say "retirement is forever away" when you're still in high school than when you're past 30.

It can hit a lot of people pretty hard, I've known family members to ditch successful careers to pursue crazy dreams purely because they felt their life wasn't really going anywhere once they hit their early 40's. At least in the event of a mid-life crisis Slowbeef has a decent career that seems to be going places as well as a wife and 2 kids to ground him a bit and make him realise he's achieved stuff.

I can imagine VoidBurger and others like her going completely of the rails when they hit 44 and realise the entirety of their life's work is an unused account on an increasingly irrelevant pay-to-post forum and a small youtube following who for the most part probably wouldn't care or notice if they stopped uploading.

Maybe that's why people like voidburger have to deny that anyone else may ever have a point so fanatically. When you have no other identity, the social justice argument du jour is all you've got to cling to so you hold on like grim death.

Also, at some point, if you have even the slightest bit of self-awareness, it does hit you at some point that you're making videos about video games at the age of 30+ for, all things considered, an insignificantly small audience, and is this really what you expected to do with your life?

Slowbeef retweets the Polygon writer, Nick Robinson, getting fired for allegedly sexually harassing women by flirting with them via twitter (Chris Grant is Editor-in-Chief at Polygon):

Slowbeef also retweeted Robinson's apology statement:

VoidBurger and fellow spergs are upset that he didn't grovel hard enough:

If I may powerlevel a smidge: I am also an internet creator. I poured energy into making a creative thing because I loved doing so, because I saw a subculture I thought I could add something interesting to, and I had (and still have, thank you guys) hundreds of people who tell me they greatly enjoyed what I did and thought it was hilarious and witty and clever and that this part of the internet is a little richer because I put something into it. I very fondly remember sitting at work for 8 hours a day and the whole time thinking "it takes an hour to make a page but I'm uploading 5 new pages tonight when I get home because I know a bunch of people will laugh at the funny ideas I'm having today".

Thing is this: I never once considered that I didn't also need a real job, and I didn't stop actually living my adult job-oriented life just because I got an internet following. I haven't drawn anything for the community in a long time (not that I don't miss it because absolutely I still do and it is damned fun for me) but I'm surviving because I'm just living a normal life with a job and can support myself. I always believed that if you want to make real art then it shouldn't make up your livelihood - because as soon as art = paycheck, you'll start compromising your ideal and ruin the escape from the mundane that your fans adore. Even if that escape is sonichu and asperchu cuddling in a denny's booth because you know your audience will get a kick out of Chris chimping at the idea of sonichu being homoerotic. The point is that if you're only doing it because you want to make people laugh, then you know the fans can feel confident that they can enjoy something fun without being interrupted with begs for patreon donations.

Art should be a thing you do in spite of revenue, not because of it. That's how I always saw it at least.

In Voidburger's ideal future there will be social justice sharia police, easily mistaken for primitive robots, who when witnessing completely natural, innocent, and innocuous attempts to have social interactions will interject with: "PLEASE DO NOT INDULGE IN YOUR HUMANITY OUTSIDE OF THE DESIGNATED AREA".

I'm sure she'd have an aneurysm at the thought of someone asking a waitress for her number or worse yet the waitress leaving a guy her number(because as the gatekeeper to the dessert menu she is clearly abusing her seat of power). I don't know how her and chip got together, but maybe she's under the impression that OkCupid has been around since the dawn of humanity?
