Let's read: Gender Queer

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
By the way, have you seen this comic where she bravely "breaks down the binary" in a folk dance class, but only after having a "gender-induced crisis"? Just like literally all of the problems she (sort of) deals with in Gender Queer, this crisis is also entirely self-induced.
I have, yeah, I spent a fair amount of time scrolling through her backlog, trying to pick and choose which comic shorts were funniest/most revealing. She's got a pretty decent chunk on her Tumblr, they're just tagged erratically, so it can take a bit to dig them up.

I think her latest is a brag about how much money she's spending on Gaza.

This was one of the strips that got me wondering about her exact financial/living status. All she ever seems to buy is bad clothes, toys, and whatever new, retarded thing her internet tells her to.

If you ever feel like doing a write-up on a different self-hating mentally disturbed individual who was also heavily involved in the fandom sphere and hates being a woman, there's Noelle Stevenson - the author of Lumberjanes, Nimona and the She-ra reboot.

Tempting, but I don't think I will. Genderqueer alone often gave me the feeling of being locked in a tiny room with a retard, and more of that so soon would be a bit much.

The experience did leave me with a whole new respect for those guys who write and update lolcow OPs for years on end, though. How they do that and stay sane is beyond me.

The E-Sim thing still feels so masturbatory. She admits all she's doing is throwing money at the situation. She doesn't try to get in contact with the person she's "helping" to see if they're even real, or doing something useful with the data she's paying for. For all she knows it is all going into streaming porn, or scamming operations.

But she gets to feel happy because throwing money into the abyss is totally the same as planting a seed and seeing it sprout.

Maia, you dumb bitch, I would actually respect you a smidge if you actually planted a real seed and cared enough for it to ever sprout. But I guess a plant doesn't care about your pronouns, and getting it to live takes more work than throwing money at it, so why bother.

The thing is that usually male is the default, grammatically from ancient times, and in modern things like medical testing and safety design and T-shirt tailoring. People can recognize this and work to mitigate it for themselves, work to improve it for the future--or they can get a dumb haircut and start whining.
Oh, I know (not that I wasn't aware of it before, but reading Criado Pérez made me realize just how ridiculously pervasive it is). It's just that I find it funny that so many women who consider themselves gender non-conforming seem perfectly fine with reinforcing the male-as-the-default norm when convenient, i.e. when they need their genderfeels validated.

I think her latest is a brag about how much money she's spending on Gaza.
That's... stunningly boring, even by her standards. Is she just trying to virtue signal, or - not to be too cynical - is she doing lowkey affiliate marketing with those promo codes? Or possibly both, I guess.

Note the last panel. Her being in a small box surrounded by white, just holding the paper. This here is an important problem with her comic- she's encouraging the "feels over reals" mentality and portraying important medical procedures as pointless and violating. For obvious reasons, children can't foresee the implications. If they read this, would they be surrounded by adults who actually see through it? Who understand that diseases like cancer are no fucking joke? Who knows. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
If you don't want a pap smear, then don't get it. Nobody forces you to get one, you will not go to jail for not getting one. If you've had sex before, having something inserted in your vagina shouldn't hurt that much, you should have gotten used to it.

I guess it makes material for a sob story in the comic.

It's an insurance thing. As the page itself says, she had been avoiding it for years. She could have said 'no', but that would have opened her to later issues with the insurance company.

And she's never had penetrative sex. Too upsetting for her genderspecial soul.

ETA: I really hate that I know so much about this bitch's sex life. There truly is nothing to Gender Queer beyond her navel gazing. At least when I think about Kate Beaton's "Ducks" I can remember her criticism of the Canadian oil industry before I remember the rape. And while I also hate Lucy Kniesley's "Kid Gloves" for being another whiny American demanding pity points because 'no one told me this could happen :(' it does have some interesting tidbits about the history of childbirth. There is genuinely no value to Maia's pity party. None.

Thanks, that makes me hate her even more. At least if she had given food or medicine that would be somewhat understandable, giving esims doesn't only sound worthless but almost assuredly is either a grift (at best) or supports terrorists directly since they are the only ones with electricity and reason to call someone (not to mention a phone that supports it).
Also shows a real fucked up priority list of remaining online being the most important thing.

I was paging through the ancient Tumblr omnibus thread, fast-forwarding through culture change, when I ran across a quote of one of Maia's comics in The Nib, 2017. Kind of phoning it in, Trump and fascism, but she did a better job of putting l'esprit de l'escalier into the main action than she did in her book:
Boy, oh boy. Didn't know where to stick this one so general tumblr stupidity it is. It would kinda fit into Trump salt or a general fascist panic thread(do we have one that's not centered on ANTIFA specifically?). Buckle up buckaroos, it's a comic:

(I'm sure you knew all that by heart, and recited it back to the old man. And his name? Alb-)

I like her art here much more than in her damn book.

The coloring is much nicer, even if her designs remain that same boring style so popular with her generation.

One of the great ironies of Genderqueer is how it marks a massive decline in the level of effort she puts into her comics in general, not helped by the fact that everything she does in digital is shittier than her trad art by default.

It's almost hard to believe this owl was made by Maia:

This sketch is relatively recent, (2023), proving that she still knows what anatomy is, on those days where she has a direct reference on hand and, yanno, feels like trying:

Even her old Thief's Tale comic has so much more life to its characters and artwork than Genderqueer.

Somewhere along the line, I think her focus became the asspats and accolades more than the art. She realized as long as she pandered to the right crowd, she didn't *need* to make anything good looking, so by and by large, she stopped.
