Lies of P - First proper bloodborne like - Which is about *checks notes* steampunk Pinochio kicking ass made by Koreans

I gave it a try and I fucking hated it.

I picked the strength sword but this shit has no reach, you need to kiss the enemies' asses to land a hit, There's not a single animation in this game that's not instantaneous or super delayed, the devs obviously just want to troll the player, The parry is useless because it doesn't damage the enemy in any capacity, the roll is super slow and has a beyond punishing delay animation after the I-frame, it's almost unusable.

The controls just suck. This game just wants to bandwagon the meme of the "le epic hardcore game", since the level and enemy designs were trash, they gimped the controls to make things artificially difficult. Everything is slow, delayed, jank, and unresponsive. Nothing feels satisfying at all.
Yeah, I tried it just now because I'm sick of Elden Ring after a few ng+ cycles and it's ass. Deleted it after getting to the first not-bonfire because I was just completely underwhelmed by everything. It doesn't even seem that hard but there's just something inherently soulless and unfun about it; derivative slop through and through, no idea why anyone liked it.

No accounting for taste, but that's literally the tutorial. You may as well throw in the towel on facing the Asylum Demon.

That's the thing though, dark souls has a lot of personality and attention to detail right from the start, to the point where you want to see more of the world. This? Might as well have been designed by an AI prompt.

Late to the party but I was surprised how good this game was. I wasn't in a rush to get and play this game because most of the souls-like games that get puffing up end up somewhere between subpar (mortal shell) to decently good (the surge) - nowhere near the production quality of a From title but, as someone with a soft spot for the genre, still entertaining. However, this game is very well made, punching well above its pedigree in polish/production value alongside being generally well designed, charming, and fun. With that said, the "tougher than all the other FromSoftware titles" talk was total bullshit as I found the difficulty to be comparable at most. Either the nerfs were drastic or this is a Sekiro situation where the increased difficulty was only for shitters who relied on all the crutches in the other games.

I've not beaten it yet (work/life/etc), though I've liked it a fair bit more than what I played of Elden Ring. The story is....on par with a FromSoft game in terms of not really mattering. You fight some guys, you make some counterintuitive choices, you may or may not be the baddie. I think they did a great job with the atmosphere and level design. I did fight the King of Puppets before the patch nerf and didn't think he was that bad, but fuck the Mad Clown Puppet. I was nearly in tears by the time I beat it, from either frustration or the insanity of fighting it with the Benny Hill theme music in the background.

The legion arms are cool in concept, but I haven't been using much more than the Aegis and the Puppet Strings. The elemental arms are useless with an Advance build, which feels a bit game breaking since you can brute force most puppet enemies with copious amounts of electricity. I'm a masochist who plays glass cannon and never learned how to parry, and haven't found it to be any harder than a FromSoft game.

I appreciate that the studio went all out in making Pinocchio an absurdly pretty anime boy, so I've opted to play the whole game with the dog head.

I should've looked whether there was a thread about this game earlier... I'm an avid enjoyer of the "souls-like" so I was excited to jump right into this one, and goddamn, was I ever impressed at the level of polish and fun I had playing through it! It reminds me of Dark Souls 3 in regards to its gameplay and encounter design, and just like DS3, the encounters in Lies of P are tailored knowing every player has acquired a certain level of skill and upgrades because the game is very linear. Now, I enjoyed Elden Ring tremendously on my first playthrough, but every subsequent run felt shockingly dull and the world increasingly empty; the encounters and engagement in ER's open world and dungeons are so boring and uninspired that it is better to skip most of the content. Everything is up to personal taste, of course, but I genuinely believe this is one of the best "souls-like" games out there. One other thing... Am I just crazy, or is there no overtly leftist/progressive trite in this game? I mean, there's not even any swarthy fellows to be found, something of which could be considered a cardinal sin in this day and age...

I'm playing this late too and I'm really impressed. Might be my favorite non-From Souls game. Don't find it too hard though it can feel awkward and definitely isn't as fluid as the From games. It has some interesting mechanics and looks/runs really good too.

As for complaints, like was said earlier the portion between killing the fire robot and the black rabbit brother (a shit fight in and of itself) is a slog and pretty much devolves into dreary brown corridors with zombies running at you with annoying traversal sections. After that it picks up again though. Maybe it could've had more weapons/consumes too, they seem kinda sparse.

I never beat it because I played it before they supposedly nerfed alot of the bosses and didn't have internet at the time to update the game.

Was stuck at the last boss and just could not beat that second phase to save my life. Figured I'd finally beat it with the DLC coming soon since I liked it more than Bloodborne or pretty much any FROM game post DS1 sans sekiro. Holy fuck were the bosses alot easier now. Still like it way more than Bloodborne but maybe that's just because Bloodborne continued my main gripes I had with DS2 and even amplified alot of them. Hope the DLC is good and improves on boss designs. Definitely looking forward to their Oz game more than whatever open world slop FROM is gonna put out next.

Story trailer for the expansion is out.

I loved the story of the original and how it actually dealt with the original intention of Pinnochio and also had an original story that weaved well into the ethos of Pinocho. I was worried about how they would handle a Wizard Of Oz themed sequel because the main theme of the books was a critique of monetary policy. Then I realized the whole point of alchemy was to synthesize gold. The same way they tried to make something finite (life and knowledge) infinite in Lies of P the theme actually fits perfectly with the Wizard Of Oz. I really hope they keep the same faithfull adaptation of the original themes and playing with mechanics to investigate those themes in the sequel.

Looks cool, hopeful this is an Old Hunters type thing and not 45 minutes of content for $20

I could really dig games adapting novels more. There's a couple of indie games I've seen do this with classes (80 Days, Nantucket for Moby Dick, Kim), but they're all kind of shitty. (Nantucket is good, it's just a small game. It's Sid Meier's Pirates with combat replaced with a whaling card game. The plot is, hilariously, that Ishmael has to break the curse of Moby Dick by hunting him down and killing him. Also, Moby Dick is an elder god of the Haida and it takes a magic spear to do it.)

This looks better than any of the stuff Fromsoft's putting out atm.

Not sure how I feel about the difficulty options though.

I think it's fine. Shadows Of The Erdtree was not very fun in my opinion and judging from the very mid reviews I'm far from the only person who thought that.

In terms of being ball destroyingly hard I think we've gone about as far as we can go and now I'd like to see the Souls and Soulslike genres innovate and try some new shit.

I don't think the linked video mentioned it but in addition to the boss rush difficulties which seem to be increases from the base difficulty, the DLC is adding two other difficulties to the main game which are easier than the default. Make of that what you will.
Personally, I thought P was pretty easy with the exception of the Nameless Puppet which shits all over pre nerf King of Puppets.

I understand why it pisses off hardcore Souls autists but I personally will just stick with the default difficulty. At the end of the day this is a single player game and who gives a shit how other people choose to experience it?

Reminds me of radfem types who get incredibly angry at the though of someone daring to mod coomer shit into a product they own and pay for.

Who gives a fuck?
