Lime, a popular electric scooter and bike rental service, has announced it will be implementing a “no-go zone” around a crosswalk painted with a large Pride flag mural in Spokane, Washington. The crosswalk has become the center of much discussion after the arrest of multiple teens for making skid marks on the painted pavement.

On June 6, the Spokane Police Department announced the arrest of three teenagers on charges of 1st Degree Malicious Mischief, all in relation to the alleged vandalism of a Pride flag-painted crosswalk at the intersection of Howard Street and Spokane Falls Boulevard.

According to the press release, “911 received a complaint advising multiple subjects on scooters were causing damage to the newly painted Pride mural.”

The release continued: “Officers observed widespread damage as black scuff marks consistent with scooter wheels were observed across the entirety of the mural. The area is clearly marked to keep traffic away as it was just re-painted to repair previous damage.”

Attached to the release were two photos demonstrating the extent of the damage, both of which showed faint black marks on the street painting consistent with thin tire marks.

The alleged vandalism, which was claimed by many to be motivated by homophobia, resulted in an outpouring of condemnation from Spokane’s LGBT community and those purporting to be LGBT allies.

One journalist from a local media station, Adam Schwager, went viral after complaining that he had witnessed other teenagers running over the pride mural crosswalk while he was doing on-site reporting.

“A group of five to six kids just started doing donuts and creating skid marks on the Pride Mural. Right in front of me as we’re reporting on three people getting arrested for doing the same thing last night,” Schwager said, accompanying his post with a video of minors riding on what appeared to be rented Lime scooters.

But the arrest, along with the seemingly minimal damage caused to the crosswalk mural, has also prompted widespread mockery on social media.

Many users on X (formerly Twitter) posted in support of the teens arrested, while others questioned why a mural had been painted at a busy intersection if it was never intended to be scuffed by tire marks.

While discussion surrounding the incident continues to rage on, the scooter rental company at the center of the alleged “acts of vandalism” has now issued a statement.

“All of us at Lime condemn these vile acts in no uncertain terms,” Lime Director of Government Relations Hayden Harvey told The National Desk. “At a time when our teams at Lime are beginning pride celebrations around the globe, it is disturbing to see the hate taking place in Spokane.”

Lime has now implemented a “no-go zone” over the crosswalk, meaning scooters driven over the mural will be remotely shut down. According to the company’s website, entering a “no-go zone” will cause a Lime vehicle to “gradually come to a stop,” forcing a rider to walk their scooter until it is outside the zone.

The incident in Spokane is not the first time an individual has been arrested or investigated for “defacing” a pride mural painted on the street.

In February, a 19-year-old from Clearwater, Florida, was arrested after being caught on video doing “burnouts” with his truck on a pride crosswalk in Delray Beach. Dylan Brewer turned himself into the Delray Beach Police Department after the video began to circulate online. He was charged with felony criminal mischief over $1000 and reckless driving.

Found some more context.

Apparently the crosswalk/mural is near a youth center that was routinely getting vandalized along with the crosswalk (place that had the window smashed in). It resulted in some new legislation popping up in the past few months that expanded on their hate crime legislation to include defacement of public property.

Seems like it's been a non-stop thing for about a year or so (pretty much ever since it was first installed), with people dumping paint on it, then the fire, and the threats against random people nearby.

Which is why they had people sorta wondering whether the law would be invoked this time around, creating the exaggerated response. Seems unlikely though given how past cases had gone where people were sentenced to stuff like writing an essay.

OLYMPIA – Legislation to update the state’s hate crime law to include defacement of public property was signed into law today by Gov. Jay Inslee.

Sen. Andy Billig (D-Spokane) introduced Senate Bill 5917 in response to vandalism of Spokane LGBTQ+ landmarks in October. The legislation closes a loophole in current law by redefining the state’s hate crime statute to include destruction and vandalism targeting public property like Spokane Pride’s crosswalk.

“Our state has passed important laws to protect people targeted for what they look like, who they love, or how they pray,” said Billig. “This legislation strengthens our hate crime laws by adding our shared public spaces and symbols of inclusion while sending a strong message of unity against these heinous attacks.”

Under the legislation, destruction of public property motivated by bias would be covered under the state’s hate crimes statute. To be found guilty under the statute, a person must act maliciously and intentionally based on a person’s race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender expression or identity, or mental, physical, or sensory disability.

We are so close to having an IRL version of scribbling "Elbereth" in the ground to repel monsters. I really, really want these companies to accidentally create a world where random sigils and shit have real, physical power because the ideological autists who designed the automated machinery that runs everything programmed that machinery to act irrationally.

This makes me so fucking angry, not even at the faggots, but at the state, they could've had them issue a public apology, repaint the mural, hell if they wanted to teach them to sympathize with the gays they could've had them do community service at a center for homeless teens since they'd probably meet a lot of people their age that got disowned for being gay, but noooo, instead they must enjoy prison stalker homophobe children, they're gonna get torn out of their social circles (families, local communites, schools) they're gonna be surrounded by violent criminals for years, and when they get out they will be uneducated, unemployable, completely disconnected from any social bonds and full of actual seething hatred towards the LGBT, when they get out there will be some mass shooting at a gay club or a pride parade and the media will cry about homophobia and guns while completely ignoring the reason it happened just like they ignore every nigger that falls into the hood rat to gangbanger pipeline.

I like how none of them consider exactly why people have come to loathe and resent these public displays. You rarely saw shit like this even a few years ago. It would be an occasional thing and would be a news story. Now it's every other day. I'm not sure if it's just tarding out any time a scuff gets put on one of these stupid things or if it's actually happening more often, but I'm inclined toward the latter.

You kinda did see it, it just wasn’t a crime due to it being public property. They changed the laws here to say it was a crime and it’s largely because of this stupid area.

We have a local hero who disposes of the lime scooters. He gives his cards to all the businesses downtown to make it legal. Lime wants to sue him, but he is a hero of the people.
Specifically, he gets a call from the business owners, and he removes the scooter left on their property. He's got hundreds of em in a fenced lot.
(Don't copy him, the lime charging mexicans will stab the fuck out of you if they catch you. He's slick, they never catch him slippin'.)
(please stop with the reddit spacing)
that last line is actually very good info that ive never thought about and would have probably gotten fucked with if i didnt know, ive always thought that if i ever went to a city with these things i would throw them into the local river but i bet there are some insane mexicans that need the money they make off of charging these things.
ill still do it if i ever get the chance but ill make sure to look over my shoulder first.

I write my posts in notepad, maybe wordwrap fucked with it. There are many youtube videos of people fucking with lime scooters and being confronted by mexicans in pickup trucks. They can track them, and they will.

I imagine if you chuck it in the river quick enough, they won't catch you.

haha, I just looked again and there are guides on how to steal the batteries off lime scooters. That is crackhead ingenuity!

stealing the batterys might be the way to go since it would shut off the gps and if your sly enough you could even profit off selling the batterys so long as their just generic lithiums
throwing them into the river is much funnier tho, id like to think that theres mexicans in pickups roaming around with radars that detect when the scooters get near a body of water and they spring in to action to hunt you down.

If it was paid for and allowed by the city and it's considered a public works, then deliberately vandalising it is absolutely a crime. Not a hate crime or a particularly egregious one, but still a crime.

If these things rely on geolocation, I wonder how they would handle being disposed of in a faraday cage
