I don't pay much attention to sports, especially not golf, but I've been watching The CW, which has just been sold off for pissing away too much money on crap like Batwoman and the Charmed reboot, as new owners Nexstar Media Group, a company that owns a shit-ton of TV stations across the country, try and figure out how to right the sinking ship. Apparently, they've found one solution: golf.

Yes, really.

They've recently signed a deal with LIV Golf, a golf league that only started last year, to air their games on the network and on The CW's OTT app. The thing is, LIV is funded with money by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, and given the country's...controversies, this deal has royally pissed off certain people; the National Press Club, for example, has blasted the network and Nexstar for even thinking of making such a deal.

Of course, this sort of thing has been going on since the league was founded; the PGA itself has threatened golfers and broadcast partners with their wrath if they even think of partnering with LIV, to the point where the US DOJ has started to investigate them for anti-competitive practices, though given how completely fucking incompetent our antitrust department is, I have a hard time believing it'll go anywhere.
 
I'm actually pulling for this, even if I think the format kind of sucks. I'm just sick of all the PGA guys virtue signaling while everyone else that joined is making more in a single tournament than they have in single seasons.

I'd rather the PGA fuck off and start putting more money into LPGA since it's one of the few watchable and top quality women's sports.
 
My thoughts as a lifelong golf fan and prolific watcher.
  1. The shotgun format is based. I was hesitant about it at first but it's a lot of fun and it's nice to be able to watch an entire round from start to finish in a few hours.
  2. The team thing is alright, could be really cool in the future if it's fleshed out more and bigger name guys continue to join.
  3. The "le Saudi blood money" cope is fucking retarded.
  4. I sincerely hope that Augusta, the R&A and USGA don't cave and continue to allow LIV golfers to play in the majors. Them cucking out and denying invites is the only thing I could see taking the league down.
  5. The TV deal is a terrible look. I honestly think it would be better for them to stay as streaming only than to air on CW. Makes them look minor league as fuck.
 
I'm inclined to believe some of the conspiracies floating around given that this came out of literally fucking nowhere. People are speculating that the antitrust investigations against the Tour might not have been going their way and they just threw their hands up and gave in. It would make sense. This was literal suicide for Monahan.
