In my particular part of the US (rural/semi-rural NorCal), "loaded fries" are offered at almost any diner. It's where you cover the fries in bacon bits and cheddar.
I was just wondering how normal this is.
Is it a local thing?
Is it a US thing?
Is it a thing most of the civilized world does?
If I went to Canada and asked for "loaded fries" as a side, would they know what the fuck I'm talking about?

You'd get poutine. Loaded fries here in the states, from what I've seen, are usually some variant of poutine.

Semi-normal in New England. Not every diner does cheese fries with bacon, but they usually have at least cheese fries, and even if it's not offered on the menu, they'll know what you're talking about if you order it special. Here, "loaded" style (cheese and bacon) is typically associated with baked or mashed potatoes, while fries tend to come in "cheese" or "chili cheese" varieties, but technically any potato dish could get loaded if you ask politely.

Canadians, I'm not sure. Quebec-coast Canadians tend to do poutine (fries with cheese and gravy) so you'll likely have to have gravy with your bacon/cheese fries.

in bongstan it's normally 'cheesy chips' which are a horrible greasy mess of too much cheese and soggy fries.

A few places do 'dirty fries' which can be very similar to what loaded fries sound like, but the toppings 'other than cheese and some kind of meat' can vary massively restaurant to restaurant
