Since the dawn of the 20th Century, famous cartoonists have often been associated with embarrassing behaviors, massive egos, borderline sociopathic tendencies, and a level of hubris and overconfidence to rival Icarus himself. Your Al Capps, your Aaron McGruders, your Garry Trudeaus, and most shamefully, your Ted Ralls.

Said tradition has proudly carried itself into the 21st Century with the rise of the webcomic. Who among you hasn't found joy in the dick pick antics of Tim Buckley? The rape apologism of loveshy-in-training Michael "Mooky" Terracciano? The Gibsonesque racism of Carlos Latuff?

I figure we should have a place to discuss these antics. Anyone up to start?

Doesn't the Questionable Content guy also practice self harm in an effort to garner sympathy, and donations, from his fans?

What's he done lately?

Aaron McGruder? The Boondocks guy? I saw a few episodes and I sort of liked it but not enough to actually follow it. What did he do?

Aren't cartoonists supposed to make you laugh?

So if they fail at that, aren't they kind of not lolcows?

Ted Rall is a genuine shitbag.

Aaron McGruder brought us Uncle Ruckus, among other things, so I forgive him any other assholery because fuck that, he's a genius.

I'm just not sure how people who don't make you laugh, even though that's their job, can be lolcows.

This is more about unintentional comedy, embarrassing behavior, or shitbaggery. Look at Tim Buckley. He makes me laugh all the time. Not for intentional reasons, but what's funnier than getting caught sending dick picks to an underage girl with her name written in blue marker above your crotch?

Making a dramatic storyline about your Mary Sue's girlfriend's miscarriage!

Aaron McGruder said:
Outside of the world of whackos and conspiracy theorists and all of that, very few people in the mainstream have been willing to say what I'm about to say, which is, I really and truthfully believe that George W. Bush is somehow involved, either directly or indirectly, in the attacks on New York City on September 11.

McGruder's an asshole and a paranoid truther. Always has been. He was one of the first mainstream truthers to bring this horrible poison out in public. He's even a Pearl Harbor truther. And there's something about the condescending way he acted towards Condoleezza Rice that really rubs me the wrong way.

I think he has enough tact and social skills to not reach the level of Rall and compare Hillary Clinton to a Transgendered Hitler, but he's certainly a paranoid conspiracy nut.

Oh, and Jesus wasn't black. I know most Europeans nowadays certainly treat Middle-Easterners and North Africans like they're not white, but they're every bit as white as the Irish. They even fill out themselves as white in the US census.

Everything you said was a lie, Aaron McGruder. Jesus was white, Ronald Reagan was the second coming, and the government told the truth about 9/11.

John Campbell, the Pictures for Sad Children guy:

Oh God, I remember reading about this. It's a shame, because I kinda enjoyed the comic. Didn't actively follow it but I checked it every now and then, and it made me chuckle now and then. And yet now all I can think of when I hear about it is the fact that the author threw a hissy fit and burned a fuckton of Kickstarter books.

I hope he gets help, it's clear there's something going on there. :/

Also, Dan Lacey, creator of FaithMouse and the Painter Of Pancakes. He started out with an incredibly bizarre fundie webcomic and moved on to painting even more bizarre political portraits. Lacey seems to be a nice enough guy and a pretty good sport, though, so I'm not sure he truly qualifies as a lolcow. Still, his work is incredible and deserves a mention in this thread.

I think the self-destructive cartoonists might be good to talk about here too. Trying to think of some good examples to discuss. Mainly those who continually pissed away at their success or something like that.

The mention of Al Capp in this thread's first post makes me want to find those strips where he makes fun of Joan Baez and the hippie movement. At one point he was being compared to Voltaire and Jonathan Swift in his satire. This was pretty much not so by the 60s.

@dollarpennypincher: John K., maybe?

There have been mixed stories about him. I can't say he's ever had the same success that he had back in the 90s when he even made an appearance on Howard Stern's show. Since then, he's mostly done commercials, had some failed TV shows, and worked on several music videos. His career since then has been a giant hit and miss.

There have to be others though who have run into similar problems.

@dollarpennypincher: If you read the book "Sick Little Monkeys" you'll probably come to understand why I suggested John K. He seemed to have gone nuts after he was thrown off his show.

There aren't actually that many lolcows in the world of animation.

$10 this turns into sperging about what people do not like about the art of the cartoonists rather than actual lolcow content

Now this is an excellent question. I have more of an animator standpoint on this.

Oddly enough, I consider Looney Tunes animator Chuck Jones a lolcow. Unlike most, he pioneered his craft so much that he became a bit of an egotist. He bashed several works for not being up to his quality, and even made fun of several movies he had helped (cough, Roger Rabbit, Cough) Just because he said they fucked up the animation standard.

Chuck Jones is not a lolcow. Geniuses are not lolcows.

Anyway, for some horrorcow material, I would like to point out that Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro, the guy who makes the incredibly popular Toriko manga, is a convicted pedophile. He was found guilty of child prostitution in 2002.

For some reason this seems to be either an unknown fact in the west, or it is routinely willfully ignored. When it is brought up, the version that is usually given is that he had sex with a 16 year old girl. The reality is much worse, though. A Japanese newspaper reported on the story as follows:

"Pedophile Shimabukuro's fall from grace was completed when Presiding Judge Tsutomu Adachi found him guilty of breaking the law regarding child pornography and child prostitution by having sex romps with schoolgirl prostitutes on five occasions.

"Despite the severity of the crime, Adachi suspended for four years the two-year sentence he handed out to the cartoonist who was axed from the enormously popular Shukan Shonen Jump comic magazine in the wake of his August arrest."

So yeah. I don't know why this person is still being supported.

John Campbell, who did "Pictures for Sad Children." He basically turned into this moody person and deleted his award-winning comic series website and threw away half of his books he was supposed to sell, claiming depression, then claimed he faked it, then - surprise - he actually had depression.

On September 19, 2012, Campbell posted an update to the Kickstarter project claiming satirically to have faked depression "for profit".[3][4][5] This post was followed up by a post stating to have had faked faking depression[3]

Dan Lacey is an example of someone who could have been an lolcow but is instead awesomesauce.

FaithMouse is a gargantuan pile of wtf. It's Sonichu level autistic.

And Dan Lacey himself was a ridiculous freeper.

But everything he's done since is amazing.

Like this.

Or my favorite, his portrait of deranged lolcow birther Orly Taitz.
