The example I gave was written by a woman, and had art drawn by a 19-year-old, who, ironically doesn't want MAPs or zoos to interact with her, despite creating such content. IMO, because it's women writing or drawing it, they still try to appeal to female sexuality vs male sexuality, but it still involves underage content.

I think thirsting over "shotas" is definitely geared towards women. However there's absolutely a large amount of male consumers of what is called "straight shota" (allah forgive me for uttering those words) which, as far as I'm aware, is meant to play into a similar - albeit even more disgusting - niche as stepmom/teacher pornography i.e. the viewer is self-inserting as the child engaging in sex with an adult woman.

So I think absolutely people who consume shota because they are attracted to children are largely going to be women, but in a broader sense its something that men participate in as well because they want to be the child. It's all Islamic and disgusting.

I also recently became aware of a particularly disgusting subgenre, surprisingly fairly openly posted on deviantart, where shotacon intersects with transformation fetishists. This was what I was referring to in my post. If you go to the shotacon tag on any hentai site and sort by popular this is all you see. Half the thumbnails are just pictures of busty women so you wouldn't even know there was a child in the hentai until you clicked on it. Male on male shotacon is way less common.

I'm not sure if this is necessarily true. Hentai sites heavily skew towards a male audience, and I find it likely that a lot of BL content wouldn't get translated or scanned on these sites because that stuff primarily appeals to women. Even gay dudes don't really like yaoi. From what I have seen, in Japan there is a large shotacon doujinshi community, and you also have to consider that a lot of women prefer fanfiction to visual erotica like manga.

Also, just a personal anecdote, I've met multiple girls IRL who admit to loving shota or at least shotaish characters from Genshin, MHA, Danganronpa etc. Never met a dude who admits to liking loli or shota irl. But again, just an anecdote.

I don't see how this is really indicative of anything. Loving a character doesn't imply sexual attraction.

It is a lot harder to get an idea of the popularity of shotacon amongst women because there isn't really one popular yaoi site but a bunch scattered about. The only yaoi site I know of doesn't even seem to have a shotacon tag even though I swear I've seen stuff like that on the site before. Their terms say child pornography is banned but they draw the line at photograph or photorealistic images of children so I'm assuming shotacon is allowed.
