An epidemic of stabbings and acid attacks in London has gotten so bad that London mayor Sadiq Khan is announcing broad new "knife control" policies designed to keep these weapons of war out of the hands of Londoners looking to cause others harm.

The "tough, immediate" measures involve an incredible police crackdown, a ban on home deliveries of knives and acid, and expanding law enforcement stop-and-search powers so that police may stop anyone they believe to be a threat, or planning a knife or acid attack.

Khan announced Friday that the city has created a "violent crime taskforce of 120 officers" tasked with rooting out knife-wielding individuals in public spaces, and is pumping nearly $50 million dollars into the Metropolitan Police department, so that they can better arm themselves against knife attacks. He's also empowering the Met Police to introduce "targeted patrols with extra stop and search powers for areas worst-affected," according to a statement.

The mayor took to Twitter to announce his new policies.

Strangely enough, Khan is responsible to decreasing the number of stop-and-searches, having previously declared the tactic racist and potentially Islamophobic. It's also not clear what local Londoners will now use to cut their food.

Parliament is also set to take up heavy "knife control" legislation when it resumes this week. The UK government is expected to introduce a ban on online knife sales and home knife deliveries, declare it "illegal to possess zombie knives and knuckledusters in private" -- "zombie knives" are those defined as being manufactured for the purpose of being used as a person-to-person weapon -- and ban sales of caustic materials to anyone under the age of 18, the Independent reports.

London has seen a dramatic uptick in murder rates, surpassing even New York City in number of homicides every month since the beginning of 2018. It has some of the strictest gun control laws in the world, and, technically, knives carried "without good reason" are off limits to anyone under the age of 18.

It's a losing battle. Banning some weapons may stop a few attacks because someone is too lazy to acquire the weapon illegally. But you won't see murder become a thing of the past. If you really want to kill someone even a big rock will do the job. Ban all weapons and we just go back to Cain and Abel. It doesn't change human nature.

It wouldn't have made a shred of difference to the knife/gang problem in Scotland. Scotland has a number of refugees measured in the hundreds and is 98% white. The overwhelming majority of kids involved in gangs here or lifted for knife offences couldn't find a non Scottish ancestor if you went back six or seven generations.

Most of the kids involved in this culture in London are black and their families have been in the UK since the government imported the Windrush generation in the early fifties. Most black kids in the UK now have a mixed background.

The thing all of these kids have in common is generational poverty, low educational attainment, and schools/social work/the justice system having absolutely zero expectations of these kids. Along with their parents. No one expects these kids to pass any exams or even get a job. Their continual truancy is silently accepted by authorities because its too much effort to get them into school and fuck trying to get them to learn anything. One in six Scottish kids in deprived areas leaves school functionally illiterate. The UK doesn't have much need for unskilled manual labour, so being a fucking dropout here is a one way ticket to the socioeconomic scrapheap.

These kids never expect to leave the estate they were born in. They spend the majority of their waking hours on the streets or in whichever hangout is least supervised. Their parents have no idea where they fucking are. Their most likely method of making a few quid is low level criminality, which brings them into contact with criminals who are better at it. They become drug couriers and the minor who holds the weapons for the 'older friends'. And these friends, their fellow gang members, are the only social circle they have, so by god, they do what they are told. After all, the other gangs in the area will fucking stab them if they go out without the protection of being in a rival gang, so better pick one and then at least one of the local gangs might not knife you for a laugh.

This isn't a problem the UK imported. This is a problem we grew ourselves for decades and decades in our inner cities, and it was cheaper and easier to yell about more police than tackle the fucking hopelessness of growing up in a poor and shitty area here. My great grandad was running in a fucking razor gang here nearly a hundred years ago. Last month one of the kids my brother was friendly with in primary school got killed in a 'local dispute'. The young guy who killed him will be dead before the summer's here. We live in one of the supposed nicest parts of the city.

This is a shitstorm we built, and it will take real hard work and commitment from government to dismantle it.

I expect none of this from Westminster. I expect Amber Rudd to keep flapping her gums about being LOL TOUGH ON CRIME whilst decades of neglect and refusal to engage with criminal justice policy continues to rack up a body count.

Finally, someone who gets it. The UK's crime issues are socioeconomically driven, and have largely fuck all to do with race. I know that doesn't fit the standard Kiwi narrative these days, but it entirely the truth.
I'm a Londoner, born and raised - I grew up in a rough area, and have watched a lot of people effectively give up and resort to the easier life of criminality. Doesn't matter what skin tone they have, or even if they're first/second/third generation immigrants or as native as it gets - if you're poor, there are very few escape routes out of it, beyond sheer bloody mindedness about digging yourself out of the shit.

Invest in a workshop, get yourself a table saw, drill press, grinder, bandsaw plus some common tools.

You can create some great things with this, and thats not inluding welding. Just remember, the more effective tools/weapons tend to have the most boring designs.
