Long-form videogame critiques - 12h background noise to put on second monitor while playing some mindless game

If you're into sports games, SoftDrinkTV does provide some insight and analysis on how some sports games performed then and now.

Here's one of his popular videos about the fall of the Madden NFL football series. Mild spoiler: it talks about EA buying the exclusive football simulation license for video games.

Games like DeSPIRIA cant be made in a mainstream fashion (or indie for that matter out of fear of backlash) beacuse all the taaboo topic the game covers (Sex, Nudity, Gore, Vore, Drugs, Religion, etc). Its one of the reason why everything feels the same and tasteless these days.
eh, it's not really taboo, it's just whatever the writers felt like making nods to based their own internal cultcha but i do like that the sex things are still alright in a few circles even with the censorship laws which can help bring out these "internal" games that never made off nipland, in AAA shit most of it was sandblasted off by the moral panics though so no sexy shit or else trannies will rope according to crapcom's notes, still better than whatever western shit tries for the desolate implied horrocore with the desolate hope as the grand example i can remember, it's fucking tiresome how many faggots drown any attempt to enjoy that game without their gay fanfic tier shit implications and scott doesn't really care about that world anymore but who knows maybe a sequel/prequel might be made but i can't blame him, dude is raking in the cash from FNAF.

now back on topic i found a nice essay about timesplitters because one kiwi brought it up and i found a few 1HR+ essays in his channel too so give it a check i guess.

I despise Joseph Anderson, the guys such a condescending smug prick on stream and constantly talks down to his audience. Essentially he will make a decree that something has to be done in a certain way in a story or that a gameplay system works in another etc etc, then when he's called out for / proven wrong either by chat or the game itself he just smugly condescendes that the game should have done it in the way he decreed.

Fat tranny cock sucking cunt, no wonder his wife left him.

Joseph Anderson
I came across his channel years ago and found a couple of his videos entertaining but very quickly realised he is probably the dumbest retard on youtube when I saw his Soma video. The game has the most basic bitch reddit tier "I love science" plot and concept but this mongoloid was completely awestruck at the game and was acting like it was some deep and complex work. What a fucking idiot.

Anyway, this isn't exactly the same as some of the other mentions because most videos don't focus on a single game but this guy is one of my new favourite retro vidya reviewers. He has a few different series like picking a few random obscure games and covering them in detail, doing "every game this publisher ever released on the PS1" and some videos focusing on a single game.

Would Tom "Joe" Anderson make for a good thread? As a semi-regular viewer of the streams, he says dumb shit on a pretty regular basis, but I'm not sure if they're dumb enough to justify a whole thread. Looking forward to losing what little respect I had for his intellect once he crashes out on the Umineko story for "being unfair" or whatever it is he's going to cope with.
Finished watching 5 hours video of some obscure Dreamcast game that only came out in japan called "DeSPIRIA".

I was coming here to recommend Marsh, apart from stuff like that he focuses on Shin Megami Tensei, so if you've ever wondered what the fuck SMT is he has a dozen or so 1-2 hour videos on the different games.

Anderson isnt even worth hate watching hes just another dime a dozen "reviewer" that has such a limited understanding of games as a whole that his analysis doesn't hold much value. He's no different from PatricianTV, saltfactory or underthemayo. They all like to talk but never actually say anything.

Very rarely there's glimpses of actually interesting topics like Patrician's magic rant in skyrim but for the vast majority of the time its just step by step instructions of events at which point a wiki could replace them.

Seconding this channel. It's some of the most obscure video game content on YT, dude has a good enough speaking voice to listen to for prolonged amounts of times and he is very thorough with his reviews. How he does a quasi-unboxing of the games in his intros is a real nice touch, i am constantly amazed in how good condition these decade old games/boxes/manuals still are when he unpacks them.
I was coming here to recommend Marsh
I think he is one of the best vidya-focused creators on YT, really excellent reviews/playthroughs. Again, a very good speaking voice and he reviews some super obscure shit apart from Megaten games. Even with those he covers some of the more esoteric titles.

I'm still making my way through the video but man, would i have loved playing that game. Marsh's intro with showcasing the magazine coverage and stuff was fantastic, top quality video even if the runtime is excessive.

What's true for most of the titles talked about on those nostalgia videos is that they would be horrible to play and only sound good since you get the abridged plot without wasting 40 hours of your life. Despiria is a textbook example since actually playing it would be switching from hours of randomly clicking until something happens, very basic combat gameplay, and long events talking about characters you haven't seen for hours.

If those games were good besides the basic concept you'd have them gain enough following in Japan to be ported outside, or at least had some westerners learning about them 20 years ago and spreading the word.

I somewhat agree, while i wouldn't play it in this day and age as my tastes in gaming have changed significantly (Roguelike Deckbuilders and their derivatives is pretty much all i play now) i would've definitely played it back in the day if it had have a western release (i got a Dreamcast on euro launch), pretty much anything that had RPG elements in it and was weird and japanese was right up my alley back then. That magazine article would've been enough for me to get endlessly hyped for Despiria. Obviously not sure if i would've ended up liking it.

Just going to say that this Vote4Holt guy is the hottest new rising star in this shithole world of game critiquing. He just did a piece on "The Dark Eye" and it's as gripping as any actual film I've seen in the last year. If anything, I'm gonna say the guy's too good and he's gonna nuke himself by either turning out to be a raging pedo or going super political. He's just too good to be true.

Its funny thinking back on Kingdom Hearts 3. The game was hype up throughout the ps3 era to the ps4 era until it released. When it did finally come out, the reaction was anger at worst and lukewarm at best.

This video pretty much goes step by step what happens in the game and afterwards with its DLC trying to "fix" its issues.

The fact no one is looking forward to KH4 is really saying something.

I got recommended this 612 views video from someone I had never seen before, and I found the video to be really good.
It a video on the most shilled indie games of all time, Blue Prince. A game with 92 critic score on metacritic, but only 7.5 user score.
I covered most of the issues with the game, and why so many people (including me) didn't really like it.

My impression of KH3 was that its story was really flaccid as a conclusion, worsened by how much hype was built up from the sheer length of time between 2 and 3 (I imagine the same thing would happen if GRR Martin ever released the last book). Gameplay looked OK, but was missing the hard mode on release for some reason. Also given KH3 was a conclusion to the story, I don't blame fans for not being excited for any future sequels (reminiscent of Halo 4 trying to continue the already complete story of the Halo trilogy). Truthfully I don't know much about KH but I remember seeing Dunkey give KH3 a 1/5 (and this was met with little to no pushback informing me the general sentiment was against the game) and I remember seeing this vid in my recommend at some point showing that there were at least some die hards defending it

Also, some recommendations:

Bexx Reviews is a lady who does pretty indepth retrospectives of arcade shooters. They aren't that long since light gun games can be beaten in 20 mins if you're good enough, but she does a good job going through the history and such of each game.

Is it allowed to suggest channels and videos?

If so, I was watching Revenant Evil's channel on the various Duke Nukem 3D ports for fifth generation consoles.

I didn't know that Duke Nukem 3D was technically ported over various consoles at the time. It's interesting to hear how developers tackled hardware limitations to get an ambitious game onto weaker hardware.

How a strategy based game embraced its toy like nature to … subvert international censorship followed by a brief history lesson on how a Panasonic game console failed.

God, I love finding content like this.

Here is another classic that never got an official or fan translation. Vampir for ps1

Oddly enough the game got a spiritual successor that came out almost a decade ago called Vampyr.
