Longrunning series that gradually worsened badly enough you like entries you previously didn't? - Perhaps I treated you too harshly, Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance

With Bloober handling the Silent Hill 2 remake I've completely given up on the series, but I've been replaying the Western made ones and they're not half bad. They at least have gameplay and combat. I reckon the SH2 remake is going to be totally linear, have QTEs for combat instead of a dedicated combat system and braindead puzzles.

Really it was Konami's fault for hiring Western devs to work on their Japanese horror franchise, but that's a staple of Japanese publishers in the steaming shit pile that is the 7th generation of consoles.

Ironically enough I thought that the pixar stuff, more in particular the toy story world, was the better disney stuff in 3. Have you even played the frozen level? That shit singlehandedly brought the game down for me.

I used to really not like Dragon Quest 2. It always felt so primitive, like a prototype version of what would come later. That coupled with it having some notorious difficulty spikes -- once you get the ship if you go to the wrong spot in the world random encounters can 1-hit you. And the NES version was just too hard right?

Probably not a popular opinion but I really don't like Dragon Quest 8 and never have. 9 I found OK. 10's a fucking MMO. 11 was a letdown (even playing the superior 3DS version), felt like it spent too much time harkening back to better games in the series.

So imagine my surprise when I went back and played NES Dragon Warrior 2 and found... yah you know it's pretty good. It's not hard if you're careful and use some strategy. The world is kinda incredible for a Jan 1987 release. The character designs are charming and the whole game is a huge step up from the first game, especially compared to the very primitive Famicom Dragon Quest 1.

Shattered Memories on Wii is genuinely good, the flashlight was a good use of the motion controls.

FFX I feel was the last truly good Final Fantasy title. X-2 was just a clusterfuck fluffball of a game, but I at least enjoyed the combat and return of the job system. Tried Final Fantasy 13 and just couldn’t give less of a shit about it. Felt that way about the series since.

Used to be one of those people who would shit on FFVIII (my bitching was before Spoony’s rant fest about it) but after 13 left such a bad taste in my mouth, 8 really isn’t that bad in retrospect, warts and all.
