I know that there is a prevalent belief that Lucas is experiencing auditory hallucinations (and he may be), but it’s possible that he’s instead experiencing auditory disturbances, delusions, or is simply lying. The 3 specific times that he’s been cited as hallucinating that I recall are: girls saying “we want your babies,” the “not a procreative type” conversation, and hearing young girls call their same-age bfs “daddy.”
The issue I have is that auditory hallucinations involve hearing things in the absence of an auditory stimulus. So for the above to be hallucinations, he would have to have heard all these things despite none of those individuals saying anything. If they were speaking, and what he heard was the above, those aren’t technically hallucinations. They are either delusions or auditory disturbances.
For example, if I hear voices calling my name coming from the TV when it’s off, it’s a hallucination. If I hear voices calling my name from a TV that’s on and making noise, it isn’t an auditory hallucination. This matters because hallucinatory experiences occur in a different part of the brain. The other concern is that delusional behavior is much more dangerous than hallucinatory experiences. Delusions and auditory disturbances tend to worsen rapidly and significantly (whereas auditory hallucinations can be far more stable and benign).
To me, it seems like he’s not hallucinating but is experiencing a worsening of his delusions. Especially since the experiences seem to coincide with his particular overall obsession. It makes me very concerned that his experience of reality is merely a reflection of his delusions, obsessions, and desires.
